  • Grace Period: Varies by lender
  • Maximum Award: No limit (up to COA)

How to Apply

Private education loans, based on your own credit history, are available to both U.S. and international students. Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Send an email to finaid@miis.edu letting us know you are interested in applying for a private education loan.
  2. Submit your Middlebury Institute financial aid application »
  3. Apply for a student loan with a private lender.
  4. If you're an international student, you'll need to find a U.S. co-signer in most cases.
  5. When your loan is approved, the lender will send us a request to certify your student loan. Your funds are then made available to the Middlebury Institute for financial aid.

If you're an international student, you may obtain private education loans with the support of a co-signer who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

To qualify for these loans, a co-signer must have:

    • Lived in the U.S. for the past two years
    • Have an acceptable credit history
    • Have two years of employment history and have current income to qualify for this loan

The Institute does not offer a list of preferred lenders. You may choose any lender that participates in the private loan program. The Middlebury Institute of International Studies Office of Student Financial Services does not receive and will not accept inducements from lenders in exchange for promoting a particular loan. In addition, we do not share in the profits from student loans.
