Will I have the opportunity to improve my language proficiency before my first semester begins?

There are many opportunities to enhance your language skills before and during your degree program. Many students attend our intensive language programs:

Please Note: When submitting your application for admission, if the Admissions Committee has any questions about your second language capabilities, you may be contacted by our Language Requirements Coordinator and asked to take a self-administered language diagnostic test and to clarify how you acquired your second language capabilities. If appropriate, the Language Coordinator may work with you to devise a Language Learning Plan to help ensure that you are on track for successfully passing the Language Placement exam administered at New Student Orientation.

Do I need to submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) for admission?

GMAT or GRE scores are required for admission to the Fisher International MBA program.

For all other degree programs, GRE scores are not required.  If you have taken the GRE and feel that your scores would enhance your application, please feel free to submit them.  Impressive GRE results may also positively influence receipt of a merit based scholarship.

Once I am admitted, how much will I have to pay to reserve my spot?

Admitted students should send a non-refundable tuition deposit of US $750 to secure their enrollment.

Why are there multiple deadlines for scholarship consideration?

You can apply to our programs at any time during the year. We receive the bulk of our applications for fall admission from late autumn through early spring. After an application is received, an admissions decision will usually be made within 4-6 weeks. All admitted applications are then eligible for merit based scholarship consideration. The committee that awards the merit scholarship funds for fall admission reviews the files 3 times during an enrollment season: December 1 (for applications received before that date), February 1 (for the next batch of admitted applicants), and March 1 (the final review). Likewise, for spring admission there is a similar enrollment season with the same process but with only one deadline: October 1.

If you aren't concerned about receiving a merit based scholarship, submit your application at any time. If you are interested in receiving a merit based scholarship, please make sure that you submit it before the review dates.

How do I apply for the merit scholarship?

All admitted applicants to the Monterey Institute are considered for Merit Scholarships. No separate application is necessary. However, the funds for these scholarships are limited, so please submit your application materials before one of the priority deadlines:

Fall Semester: December 1st, February 1st, March 1st
Spring Semester: October 1st

Can I enroll as a part-time student?

Most students enroll full-time, preferring to complete their professional degree in two years. It is possible, however, to take classes on part-time basis as a both a degree and non-degree seeking student. As a non-degree student, you may take up to eight credits a semester. Please contact your Enrollment Managers for more details.

How many people applied to the programs last year? How many students enrolled in programs?

This year we received over 1,100 applications for our graduate programs. About 400 of these students will enroll in fall semester classes. Because of our commitment to the Monterey Way, we have found that most candidates self-select themselves for our programs.

I am fluent in a foreign language. Can I waive the language requirement for the international policy and business degree programs?

In certain cases, students who demonstrate near-native level fluency in a foreign language may waive all or part of their language requirements. Non-native English speakers who demonstrate a high level of English proficiency may also do this.  Your Enrollment Manager will facilitate consideration for this upon request.

Do you offer online courses?

We offer a handful of online courses, we do not currently offer degree programs online.

Can I transfer credits towards my graduate degree?

Yes, you can transfer up to 25% of total degree credits from past graduate level coursework. Please review our advanced entry guidelines for more details.

I haven't completed my application yet. Can I still send my transcripts, letters of recommendation, and test scores?

Test scores, transcripts and letters of recommendation can be sent to MIIS at any time, even if the rest of your application is not yet complete.  We will store these documents in a temporary file until we receive your application or for up to one year.

If I have no professional experience, should I still apply for a graduate degree?

Because graduates of the Monterey Institute strive to be practitioners in their area of expertise, many find that prior professional experience is helpful when making the decision to apply to graduate school. Such experience helps many of our students clarify and articulate their future professional goals.

The Admissions Committee looks favorably upon those candidates who can demonstrate some work experience, considering a broad range of professional experiences including internships, volunteer work, military service, Peace Corps service, full-time positions, and more. However, there are no formal experience requirements to apply to the Monterey Institute.

How soon will I receive an admissions decision?

Admissions decisions for most programs are typically made 4 to 6 weeks after all application materials have been received.

However, applicants to the translation and interpretation programs should expect an admissions decision 6 to 8 weeks after each scholarship review deadline.

When are the application deadlines?

We accept applications on a rolling basis: there are no specific deadlines.  You can apply anytime!  US students should submit their applications at least one month before the semester start date; international students should submit their applications at least three months in advance.

If you're applying to our Translation and Interpretation programs, please submit all materials by May 1st at the latest to ensure fall semester enrollment.

How do you evaluate applicants for admission?

We do not adhere to a strict formula for admission. Instead, we evaluate all application materials, considering both past academic performance and professional experience, in our decision-making process.

If I have a GPA less than the minimum requirement (3.0 on a 4.0 scale), should I still apply?

Applicants to our graduate programs must have a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited college or university and a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If you have a GPA lower than 3.0 and significant professional experience, please contact one of our Enrollment Managers during the application process.
