Last year a record number of Monterey Institute alumni went the extra mile to support future students and their alma mater - and this year the goal is to break that record again.
Changing Lives Through International Education
January 16, 2013
"The work that I do...without mincing words, changes people lives."
That is the simple yet powerful answer that Justin Maniar (MAIPS '10) gave when asked about the work he does promoting international education.
"I work with so many students who without the support of people in the field of international education would never have the resources, support or encouragement to go abroad and seek out international education experiences," says Maniar.
Justin works for International Studies Abroad in Austin, Texas as Coordinator of Latin America Programs, Central America & Caribbean. His duties include being a liason between on-site staff and the Austin headquarters, advising interested and accepted students, and working on a variety of projects including marketing, curriculum development and program logistics.
"I like my role, because I am charged with really making study abroad happen for students, on a real level."
Justin says that his work in international development while studying at the Monterey Institute gave him practical tools and skills that have translated well to the field of international education.
"I can look at a study abroad program in the same terms as a program for development," he says. "It is a long term plan that we have that should sustain itself, grow, be effective, and must be constantly monitored and evaluated."
Justin says the number one thing students need for a career in international education is experience abroad.
"You have to show what you got out of the experience and demonstrate passion about working to make the opportunities that you had happen for others."
