Application fee waivers are available for students affiliated with our partner organizations or schools.

- Early Diagnostic Test (EDT): Required only for Translation, Translation and Interpretation, Conference Interpretation, and the translation specialization in the Translation and Localization Management degree program.
- To apply for merit or need-based scholarships, submit your online application for admission by the next priority deadline. Both U.S. and international students are eligible.
- We also give guaranteed scholarships to Middlebury alumni and their extended family members and students affiliated with our partner organizations, such as Peace Corps, Fulbright, JET, AmeriCorps, WorldTeach, and many more.

Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
Your résumé or curriculum vitae should highlight your educational background and professional experience in one or two pages. Most of our graduate programs do not have specific professional experience requirements. However, for our One Year MBA, you must demonstrate a minimum of two years of professional work experience.
Personal Scholarship Statement
To receive priority consideration for merit and need-based scholarships, please include a Personal Scholarship Statement with your online application. To find out the details of the scholarship statement, please start your application.
Through our online application, you will be able to pay the non-refundable $65 application fee with a credit or debit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit or debit cards. Application fee waivers are available for students affiliated with our partner organizations or schools.
We can use unofficial transcripts to review your application but if you are admitted we will need official transcripts. Official transcripts for your undergraduate degree and/or previous graduate degree (if applicable) should be sent directly to the Admissions Office in sealed envelopes from all of the academic institutions you have attended:

If you are currently attending a bachelor’s degree program, we can grant you admission with the condition that you satisfactorily complete your degree and provide final official transcripts.
If your college or university does not provide original transcripts, we will accept certified copies. Please provide certified English translations for non-English language transcripts.
One Letter of Recommendation (two preferred)
Although we only require one letter of recommendation for admission, we strongly encourage you to submit two letters of recommendation. We accept recommendations from both academic and professional references, such as university professors, employers, supervisors or commanding officers.
Please provide the contact details for one or two recommenders through your online application. Your references will receive an email requesting that they submit the letter of recommendation through an online form.

GMAT and GRE
GMAT scores are required for the MBA in Global Impact Management program. However, GRE scores may also be submitted as a substitute for the GMAT. GMAT or GRE waivers are available for qualified candidates. Please contact your enrollment advisor to learn more.
- We do not require GRE or GMAT scores for our other master’s programs. However, your scores may strengthen your application and positively influence scholarship decisions.
- Please use our four-digit institution code  to send us your scores.
TOEFL or IELTS
If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of English proficiency from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations. Your scores are valid for two years after the test date. Please check your degree of interest for more details on specific preferred minimum scores. If necessary, you may have the opportunity to improve your English language skills through our English Preparation for Graduate Studies program (only available in the summer). Scholarships are available.
- Translation, Interpretation, and Localization Management (Translation Specialization)
If you are applying to a master’s degree in Translation, Translation and Interpretation, Conference Interpretation or the Translation Specialization in the Translation and Localization Management degree, you will submit an Early Diagnostic Test (EDT) to demonstrate proficiency in your first and second languages. The program requires that you have native or near-native abilities in each of your languages of study. We also highly recommend that you have a minimum of 6 months of in-country experience using your second and/or third languages.
- Optional 3rd Language
A third language [C language] option is available for the MA in Translation, the MA in Translation and Localization Management (Translation Specialization) or the MA in Conference Interpretation. This option is not available for the MA in Translation and Interpretation. You will also need to submit an EDT for your third language.
- Translation and Localization Management (Localization Specialization and Management Specialization)
A language proficiency writing sample is required to show at least an Intermediate High level of proficiency in a second language.
- TFL - Teaching Foreign Language
If the language you would like to teach differs from your native language, you will need to submit a writing sample and complete a phone interview to demonstrate your language proficiency. The writing sample should be a 2-3 page document on any topic in your language of instruction. Our language faculty will contact you by phone or email to arrange the interview.
- TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
No second language proficiency requirements.
- All Other Programs
Proficiency in a second language is a requirement in our degree programs. Students have to be at the 200-level or higher in that language in order to enroll in any of the Graduate School of International Policy and Management degree programs. Languages regularly offered include Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Other languages may be available upon inquiry.
While many of our students come to the Institute proficient in a second language, others build their second language skills prior to enrollment. We will work with you to help you meet the minimum recommended proficiency level in your chosen language of study. Part of this may include our summer language programs, for which scholarships are available.
