Admission Requirements -
Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics


  • MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • MA Teaching a Foreign Language (TFL)
  • Peace Corps Master’s International TESOL
  • Certificate Programs

US Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited college/university

Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0. scale

Language Requirement for Non-native Speakers of English
It is presumed that non-native speakers of English will study English as their second language. Non-native speakers of English are required to provide proof of English proficiency by submitting scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS examinations.

  • TOEFL minimums: 600 (paper) 250 (computer) 100 (internet)
  • IELTS minimums: 7.0 overall score, 7.0 on listening and reading sub-scores and no subscore below 6.5 on writing and speaking on the Academic module

MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Native Speakers of English
There is no language requirement for TESOL students. Any student who wants to take a language course must be able to demonstrate that he/she can work at a third-year college level or higher in their language of study (Arabic at a second-year college level for fall entry/fifth-semester college level for spring entry). Language Placement Tests are given during New Student Orientation.
 
MA Teaching a Foreign Language
The Teaching a Foreign Language program requires students to demonstrate a high proficiency (4th year college-level or higher) in the teaching language. Applicants must submit a two-to-three page writing sample on any topic and complete a telephone interview in the teaching language (language faculty will contact students by e-mail or phone to arrange an interview).
 
Peace Corps Master’s International TESOL
The Peace Corps Master’s International program is only available to US citizens. Applicants must meet all admissions requirements for MATESOL degree program and the US Peace Corps. Students must apply to the Monterey Institute and the Peace Corps separately and concurrently. Applicants should visit http://www.peacecorps.gov/ to review application procedures. It is recommended that the applicants begin the Peace Corps application process several months in advance as it usually takes more time than the application process at the Monterey Institute.

Non-degree Program
Students who do not plan to study for a degree must meet the same requirements as those studying for a degree. Some exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
