Native Speakers of English There is no language requirement for TESOL students. Any student who wants to take a language course must be able to demonstrate that he/she can work at a third-year college level or higher in their language of study (Arabic at a second-year college level for fall entry/fifth-semester college level for spring entry). Language Placement Tests are given during New Student Orientation. MA Teaching a Foreign Language The Teaching a Foreign Language program requires students to demonstrate a high proficiency (4th year college-level or higher) in the teaching language. Applicants must submit a two-to-three page writing sample on any topic and complete a telephone interview in the teaching language (language faculty will contact students by e-mail or phone to arrange an interview). Peace Corps Master’s International TESOL The Peace Corps Master’s International program is only available to US citizens. Applicants must meet all admissions requirements for MATESOL degree program and the US Peace Corps. Students must apply to the Monterey Institute and the Peace Corps separately and concurrently. Applicants should visit http://www.peacecorps.gov/ to review application procedures. It is recommended that the applicants begin the Peace Corps application process several months in advance as it usually takes more time than the application process at the Monterey Institute.
