Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 should consider submitting official GRE scores and/or taking several graduate level courses at an accredited college/university to demonstrate their ability to perform well at the graduate level.
Economics
A basic understanding of economics is a prerequisite to enrolling in the required International Economics core course. Applicants to GSIPS are strongly encouraged to demonstrate proficiency in economics prior to enrolling. Proficiency may be demonstrated in two ways:
- Submitting transcripts showing college-level microeconomics and macroeconomics or a course in the principles of economics that includes the study of oth micro- and macroeconomics (Students must receive a B- or better and have taken the courses within the past three years)
OR
- Passing the Economics Placement Exam administered during New Student Orientation
Students with little or no economics background are strongly encouraged to apply for admission, but are advised to enroll in appropriate economics courses that include the foundations of micro- and macroeconomics. If courses are not available, students may study on their own in preparation for the Economics Placement Exam administered during New Student Orientation.
Minimum Language Requirements
Two years of recent successful college-level language or the equivalent (except for Arabic)Arabic: 1 year for fall entry (1 ½ years for spring entry) of recent successful college-level language or the equivalent.
Evaluating your Language Skills
To help evaluate language skills (other than English or Arabic), students may download a Diagnostic Language Test. The test is self-administered and will help you evaluate your level of language proficiency in reading and writing your chosen language. Please note that admitted students will also be required to demonstrate advanced speaking and listening comprehension skills in their Language of Study during New Student Orientation. Since only advanced language courses (3rd and 4th year college level) are offered during the academic year, students who do not have the minimum level of proficiency are strongly encouraged to consider beginning their studies by enrolling in the Monterey Institute’s Intensive Language Programs or at Middlebury College in order to bring their language skills up to the appropriate level.
Language Requirement for Non-native Speakers of English
It is presumed that non-native speakers of English will study English as their second language. Non-native speakers of English are required to provide proof of English proficiency by submitting scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS examinations.
- TOEFL minimums:
- Paper-based test (PBT): 550 minimum, Test of Written English: 4.0
- Computer-based test (CBT): 213 minimum, Test of Written English: 4.0
- Internet-based test (iBT): 80 minimum, Test of Written English: 23, no other subscores below 19
- IELTS minimums: 6.5 overall score with no sub-score below 6.0 on the Academic module
Applicants who wish to study a language other than English must submit a higher TOEFL or IELTS score report and submit an official college/university transcript showing two years of recent successful language training in their proposed language of study.
TOEFL minimums: 620 (paper) 260 (computer) 105 (internet)
IELTS minimums: 7.5 overall score with no sub-score below 7.0 on the Academic module
Non-native speakers of English who obtain a bachelor’s degree at an accredited US college/university may have the TOEFL or IELTS exams requirement waived for admission; however, they will still be required to take the English Language Proficiency Exam during New Student Orientation. Waiver requests should be made to the Admissions Office.
This is an honors program that requires two years of prior study at an accredited college/university. Applicants should contact the Admissions Office by e-mail at admit@miis.edu or call 831-647-4123 to make an appointment to discuss their academic background prior to submitting an application.
Applicants must meet most of the requirements for the degree programs; however, there is no language requirement for native speakers of English. Students must have a US master’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited college/university or must have equivalent professional experience. Students who do not plan to study for a degree must meet the same requirements as those studying for a degree. Some exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
