Monterey California, Washington D.C., Rwanda, and Kenya are the locations offered in the Design, Partnering, Management and Innovation (DPMI) program.


Winter 2016

Monterey, CA

Nairobi, Kenya

    • Dates: June 14-23, 2016

      • Kenya will be held in Nairobi.
      • Monterey, California is offered on the Middlebury Institute of International Studies campus.
      • Rwanda will be offered at Partners in Health in Rwinkwavu, Rwanda with two days of site visits in the surrounding region.
      • Washington, D.C is held at the Middlebury offices. There are hundreds of international development organizations located in the DC area that participants are encouraged to connect with while in DC. Accommodation near the training is available through the Institute at a group rate of $40/night for shared rooms.



The class meets five days each week on weekdays, leaving ample time in the evenings and during rest days between modules to explore the area and attend events being held at development organizations. Students have Saturdays and Sundays free. As noted above, the schedules for the Rwanda and Kenya DPMI programs are slightly different.


Program Fees

Note: Lodging and food not covered unless noted. Airfare, vaccinations, visa fees, and other misc. travel costs not included in program fees

    • Monterey January 3-Week: $2,500 ($1,000 for MIIS students)
    • Monterey May/June 2-Week: $2,000 ($800 for MIIS students)
    • Washington, DC: $2,500 ($1,000 for MIIS students) Shared lodging at $40/night may be available upon request.
    • Kenya: $2,500 ($1,500 for MIIS students) Fee includes shared hotel lodging and two meals a day.
    • Rwanda: $2,500 ($1,500 for MIIS students) Fee includes shared lodging, food, and some local transportation.
    • Rwanda Local Culture Immersion: $1,200 - Fee includes shared lodging and local transportation to meetings with key government and NGO leaders.
    • Scholarships: Applicants who are not current MIIS or Middlebury College students can apply for a partial scholarship. Please email dpmi@miis.edu for more information.

*International Student Information and Deadlines 

All international participants wishing to take part in the 2016 DPMI Winter Course in Monterey, CA are strongly encouraged to apply to the program by September 1, 2015, as to allow sufficient time to secure a visa for the program. The U.S. Department of State can issue a F-1 visa up to 120 days prior to the start of your program. Due to the winter holidays and U.S. Embassy closures in November and December, MIIS encourages students to start the visa application process as soon as possible.
