Frontier Market Scouts

Professional Certificate Training in Impact Investing and Social Enterprise Management

The Frontier Market Scouts brings expert practitioners and aspiring professionals together three times per year to offer two-week certificate programs in Monterey, DC, and Amsterdam. These training sessions are followed by a 2-12 month field assignment. Please note that the short-term (2-6 months) fellowship assignments are more likely to be available during the summer months for those attending graduate school. 

Shared Benefits

All FMS participants gain a professional certificate in impact investing and social enterprise management and join the FMS and the Institute-Middlebury College global alumni network.

FMS participants also receive preferential review for the Institute graduate degree programs should they decide to apply for a graduate degree in conjunction with the FMS program or as an FMS alumnus.


Location: Middlebury Institute of International Studies campus in downtown Monterey, California in close proximity to Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay area.

Who Should Attend: Career builders with 2+ years professional experience who are looking to develop a purpose-driven career. Ready and willing to consider a fellowship in regions around the world, particularly in emerging market areas. 

Unique Qualities: This is where it all started back in 2011!  The training prepares participants for field experience fellowships in 15 different countries including placements at internationally-focused social enterprises based out of the United States.

Focus: Growth-stage investment and social enterprise management in regions around the world.

Who Should Attend: Career changers with 4+ years professional experience who are looking to explore a pivot into the social impact sector. Those who are seeking new connections, knowledge, and inspiration in order to re-focus their professional track. 

Unique Qualities: Washington is an ideal place to step into an impact-focused career. It is a hotbed for social enterprise and responsible investing starting  at the top with the White House Office of Social Innovation and moving through the development and private sectors to make up for a dynamic and growing community of social entrepreneurs, activists, and responsible money managers.

Amsterdam (Not available for Winter 2016)

Focus: Seed-stage investment and social enterprise management in regions around the world.

Location: The Hub Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Dates: Not offered for Winter 2016

Unique Qualities: Training is based in Amsterdam, widely known as a hotbed of social innovation. The training is offered at the Impact Hub Amsterdam where participants have the opportunity to mingle with member entrepreneurs and impact investors.  The Amsterdam training features numerous guest speakers from large-scale development banks, impact investing foundations, and social enterprises.
