FMS brings expert practicioners and aspiring professionals in the social enterprise management and impact investing space together for trainings in four locations around the world.
All of the following trainings allow participants to earn a professional certificate in impact investing and social enterprise management and join the FMS and Monterey Institute-Middlebury College global alumni networks.
FMS participants also receive preferential review for Monterey Institute graduate degree programs should they decide to apply for a graduate degree in conjunction with the FMS program or as an FMS alumnus.
Focus: Seed-stage investment and social enterprise management in developing regions around the world
Location: Monterey Institute of International Studies campus in downtown Monterey, California in close proximity to Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay area.
Dates: January 1-18, 2014 and June 1-14, 2014
Unique Qualities: This is where it all started back in 2011! The training prepares Scouts for field placements in 15 different countries including placements at internationally-focused social enterprises based out of the United States. Training includes a Bay Area/Silicon Valley networking event and guest speaker panel and a local trip to the majestic Big Sur wilderness.
Focus: Investment in the US social enterprise market (with more than 1000 CFDIs) as an alternative to traditional funding sources as well as increasing funding to organizations with a civic engagement focus.
Location: James Sorenson Center for Global Impact Investing at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah
Dates: January 11-24, 2014 and June 7-20, 2014
Unique Qualities: Scouts work directly with the University Impact Fund and entrepreneur, James Sorenson, during the training. The January Utah training will overlap with the world-reknown 2014 Sundance Film Festival taking place against the backdrop of Utah's world famous Olympic venues and skiing/snowboarding.
The winter training concludes with the 11th annual 2014 University Private Equity Summit, a leading 3-day conference focused on students interested in venture capital, impact investing, private equity, and entrepreneurship which takes place at Rice-Eccles Stadium and includes leading industry professionals in an unprecedented networking opportunity for students.

Location: The Hub Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Dates: February 2-15 and June 29-July 12
Unique Qualities: Training is based in Amsterdam, a historic, cosmopolitan, commercial hub for Europe and coordinated by the De Baak Management Center. De Baak was founded upon the Humanist tradition of the 1950s and pioneered the understanding of the human side of enterprise. The training is more conveniently located for European, Middle Eastern, and African participants. Program will include optional site visits and guest speakers that draw on the emerging social enterprise sector in Holland.
Focus: Growing the social enterprise industry in Africa and training professionals in seed-stage investment and social enterprise management dedicated to the region
Location: Ashesi University in Accra, Ghana
Dates: June-August 2014 (exact dates to be determined)
Unique Qualities: Ashesi University in Ghana, a new program funded by the Shell Foundation, has prioritized preparing Africans for immediate and long term professional paths on the continent. 95% of Ashesi graduates since 2006 have remained in Africa and this is a driving element of the University's strategy in its activities. Training content will focus on Africa's social enterprise sector and primarily include African participants as well as those dedicated to strategies in this region.
