Prior to accepting the Monterey Institute of International Studies appointment, Jerry was the Founder/CEO of the award winning Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA. His responsibilities there included management and administration of the Center, innovative program design, formation of the Council of University Social Entrepreneurs (student arm of the Center), establishment of the Board of Stakeholders composed of 26 social entrepreneurship professionals, development of the Mentorship Program, creation of the privately funded Ambassador Corps international internship program, launching a student operated social enterprise that provides technical assistance to start-up social entrepreneurship organization locally and globally, instituting a Business Basics Boot Camp for Non-business Students, coordination of sustainability workshops for local non-profit organizations, research and development of the first community-based microfinance fund in the Central Valley of California. At Pacific, over eight years, he created a whole new generation of hands-on solution-minded pragmatists that pioneered practical, inventive, and sustainable approaches that address the world’s most pressing social issues.
Jerry has spoken at numerous conferences (Ashoka Changemaker Campus Exchange, ThinkImpact Huddle, Opportunity Collaboration, DELL Challenge, Middlebury Symposium, Northwestern Buffett Center) and individual universities on the Pacific Experience “Creating a University Center of Social Entrepreneurship from Scratch: Land Mines and Lessons Learned.” Most recently, he has given workshops on the "Top Ten Kickass Low Cost Experiential Learning Opportunities" for University Social Entrepreneurship Programs.
Jerry presently serves on the board of directors of the Cordes Foundation, Fair Trade University USA, Opportunity Collaboration, Stockton Impact Corps (Community Microfinance Fund), The World We Want Foundation, and the Semester At Sea Corporate Advisory Board.
Dr. Yuwei Shi is the founding director of the Frontier Market Scouts Program, and co-founder and board director of Sanghata. He is dean and professor of strategic management at Graduate School of International Policy and Management, Monterey Institute of International Studies. His expertise is in the areas of competitive strategy, venture and business model development and evaluation. Yuwei is board director of Scholarly Exchange, a web services company based in Brookline, MA, and advising partner at Indachin, an investment advisory firm with offices in Hong Kong, London, Geneva, and Silicon Valley, California. He earned his bachelor of engineering degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, master of comparative law from the Dedmen School of Law at Southern Methodist University, and PhD in organization, strategy and international management from University of Texas at Dallas School of Management. Ms. Carolyn (Taylor) Meyer is Director of Professional Immersive Learning and Special Programs in the Graduate School of International Policy & Management at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a graduate school of Middlebury College. She manages semester-long immersive learning programs such as the International Professional Service Semester (IPSS), DPMI International Development Practicum (DPMI Plus), and Frontier Market Scouts (FMS) fellowship. In addition to working with the Institute’s credit-bearing internship programs, she helps design and manage specialized short trainings open to participants who are not currently enrolled at the Monterey Institute but are looking to learn new skills related to MIIS degree programs.
She advises MIIS graduate students interested in participating in a semester-long immersive learning program/fellowship/co-op while also building a network of international and domestic internship opportunities at field and headquarter locations within the security, environmental policy, conflict resolution, social enterprise, and development sectors. Erina supports programs and recruiting at the Center for Social Impact Learning (CSIL) where she connects talented and purposed-fueled professionals with meaningful opportunities in social enterprise and impact investing. Erina's portfolio of programs includes the Frontier Market Scouts, Ambassador Corps, and Development Consulting research. Additionally, she helps CSIL to host an ongoing lineup of special events and workshops featuring some of the world’s most committed change-makers.
Before joining the Institute, Erina’s experiences ranged from being a farm kitchen chef and bread making guide for a therapeutic Anthroposophical organization on rural Vancouver Island to helping a college corporate and donor relations team prepare for visiting speakers such as Maya Angelou and Robert Redford, to her most recent role as a digital strategies specialist at a local publishing company.
Erina received a B.S. in Communications with a concentration in public relations and a minor in French from Salem State University in Massachusetts. Nicole Manapol is an MPA candidate and Peace Corps Fellow at the Monterey Institute with a focus on Business, Sustainability and Development. Nicole received a B.S. in International Affairs with a concentration in Middle East History from Georgetown University. Originally from the East Coast, Nicole has worked in the field of international development over the past 10 years in Central America, the Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East and North Africa, implementing organizational capacity building programs with a wide range of NGOs, educational institutions and social enterprises.
