Focus: Financial Analysis and Modeling for Social Businesses, Projects and Impact Investing Funds
Who Should Attend: Many purpose-driven people have worked “close to the impact” through the Peace Corps, or with a local nonprofit. However, the essential frameworks for social business design can be challenging to distinguish for those who have little or no background in basic finance.

Frontier Market Scouts Certificate Training: Monterey

Location: Middlebury Institute of International Studies campus in downtown Monterey, California in close proximity to Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay area.
Dates: January 9-20, 2017
Focus: Seed-stage investment and social enterprise management in regions around the world.
Who Should Attend: Career builders with 2+ years professional experience who are looking to develop a purpose-driven career. Ready and willing to consider a fellowship in regions around the world, particularly in emerging market areas.
Unique Qualities:

The training prepares participants for social sector fellowships in emerging market regions outside of the United States including placements at small and growing social enterprises, capacity building programs (incubators or accelerators), nonprofits, impact investing funds and foundations.

Social Impact Finance Training: DC 

Location: Middlebury K Street Office, DC. The Middlebury DC office is situated in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C., at 1400 K Street NW. Click the following link for detailed directions.

Focus: Growth-stage investment and social enterprise management in regions around the world.
Who Should Attend: Career changers with 4+ years professional experience who are looking to explore a pivot into the social impact sector. Those who are seeking new connections, knowledge, and inspiration in order to re-focus their professional track.
Unique Qualities: Washington is an ideal place to step into an impact-focused career. It is a hotbed for social enterprise and responsible investing starting at the top with the White House Office of Social Innovation and moving through the development and private sectors to make for a dynamic and growing community of social entrepreneurs, activists, and responsible money managers.

Each program offers is own unique focus and advantages. We recommend that you select a program based on your current status as either an emerging professional or an experienced professional who is considering a career change or realignment.

About the Program

The Frontier Market Scouts Program selects and trains compassionate and capable young professionals to become talent scouts and investment managers serving local entrepreneurs and social-minded investors in low-income and weak-capital regions of the world. The scouts provide due diligence for investors and technical assistance for entrepreneurs with the goal of generating high-quality deal flows and supporting portfolio companies at a low cost.

The program consists of a 2-week training in Monterey, California or Washington, DC in January, February, and June. The training prepares fellows field assignments around the world that last up to 12 months.

Applicant Eligibility

Those with a strong interest in enterprise development and impact investment at the Base of the Pyramid, a solid business or management background, and an excellent aptitude for cross-cultural immersive professional learning are eligible to apply for the FMS Program. The Institute students in any degree program may apply. Outside participants who are advanced undergraduates, graduate students, career-changers, or junior professionals are also welcome.

Housing

There is no on-campus housing available on the Institute campus in Monterey. However, the The Institute Student Services Office can assist participants with Monterey housing resources.
