Past Events

The Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program has brought in world-renowned security experts from a range of fields including counterterrorism, intelligence, and special operations to participate in conferences, workshops, and guest lectures. Below are some of the past events that the Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program has hosted.

March 28-30, 2014 | Special Operation in Counterterrorism Workshop

The Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program at the Monterey Institute hosted its second annual workshop on special operations in counterterrorism bringing in experts in the field to MIIS to present March 28-30, 2014. Guest speakers from ranging from active duty military officers from Naval Post Graduate School’s Defense Analysis Department, Linda Robinson from RAND, as well as specialists from many other special operations fields, explored intelligence and SOF related challenges related to their roles in countering terrorism threats. Both intelligence and SOF have been instrumental in addressing all major threats to US National Security for the past several decades, however, since 9/11 both have increased in importance to U.S. policy makers as they address America’s new enemies; transnational, non-state actors with global reach and who are seeking access to weapons of mass destruction.

March 6-7, 2014 2nd Annual Conference: Terrorism and Counterterrorism in Africa

Terrorism and Counterterrorism in Africa: On March 6th & 7th, 2014 the Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program hosted its second annual conference.  Panelists debated terrorism threats, counterterrorism measures, and illicit trafficking in Africa. Featured Keynote Speaker: Former AZ Congressman Jim Kolbe.  This conference was generously sponsored by: The Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) at West Point, The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, McGraw-Hill Publishing, and the Monterey Institute.

October 18-20, 2013 | Intelligence and Counterterrorism Workshop

This workshop convened professionals in the fields of intelligence and counterterrorism to share with students their experiences in applying theory to practice across these fields.

February 21-22, 2013 | The Terrorism-Trafficking Nexus Conference
MonTREP hosted a timely conference on the increasingly important topic of the terrorism-trafficking nexus. McGraw-Hill Education will be publishing a book entitled The New Clear and Present Danger which will incorporate many of the papers that were presented at the conference. February 15-17, 2013 | Intelligence and Special Operations in Counterterrorism Workshop 
This workshop convened professionals in the fields of special operations, intelligence, and counterterrorism to share with students their experiences in applying theory to practice across these fields. The material presented laid the groundwork for students’ understanding of the intricacies inherent to each of these institutions and the histories and structures of each.
