Monterey Terrorism Research & Education Program

Foundational Courses (8 credits total)

Advanced Language (12 credits total)

Students must take at least 12 credits of advanced language courses, which may include the following content-based language courses focusing on nonproliferation and terrorism:

  • CHLA 8499, JALA 8499, or RULA 8499, Contemporary Issues in Nonproliferation  (Monterey Model language course in Chinese, Japanese, or Russian; 4 credits)
  • SPLA 8476 Terrorism in the Hispanic World (in Spanish; 4 credits)

Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies Gateway Courses (11 credits total)

    Students must take at least 14 additional credits in any subject to complete the 60 credits required for the MANPTS degree. While the topics of elective courses need not be related to nonproliferation or terrorism, the following workshops offered by the program may be included:

    Capstone Project (2 credits)

    The culminating requirement for the MANPTS degree will be an individualized capstone project demonstrating all the professional competencies acquired through the program. Under the direction of a faculty member who has previously guided their work in a research seminar, students will build upon their previous work to create a project which displays the depth and breadth of knowledge and professional skills acquired through the MANPTS program. Capstone projects will typically take the form of a major work of original research (40-80pp) of publishable quality. Other formats may be developed with the approval of the faculty member supervising the capstone.  Students will register for two credits of Capstone Research and Writing (IPOL 8605) while completing their capstone project.
