Chief Minister of Gujarat province in India, Modi assumed office in 2001. He is a candidate for the office of the prime minister in the general elections in 2014, and will be running for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is the longest serving Chief Minister in Gujarat’s history. There is much controversy over his leadership both nationally and internationally. While his economic policies have created high economic growth in Gujarat, the policies have not been able to make a significant impact on human development and poverty alleviation throughout the state. Additionally, he and his administration have been criticized for the alleged involvement and handling of violent clashes between Hindus and Muslims, most notably in 2002. While in office he has been critical of many of the policies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and has made many international visits to China and Japan to attract foreign investment for the region.
