Argentina’s first female president and 52nd overall; Kirchner was elected in 2007 with 45% of the vote and re-elected in 2011 with 54% of the vote. She started her professional career as a lawyer after graduating from the University of La Plata in the early 1970s. She began her political career in 1989 in the province of Santa Cruz where she served in various positions, including National Deputy on the Argentine National Congress. She then became National Senator for Santa Cruz from 2001-2005 and National Senator for Buenos Aires from 2005-2007, when she was elected president. During her time in the National Congress, her husband, Nestor Kirchner, was president from 2003-2007. As president, her major policy reforms or campaigns have been on agrarian reform and national debt reduction.
