An audio-visual competition for students in Grades 5 to 12 in the U.S. school system


Competition Dates

Submissions will be accepted Aug.15 -Oct. 15, 2013. The selection committee will announce winners on Oct. 25, 2013.  The top three winners will be sponsored to travel to receive their awards in Monterey at a ceremony on Nov. 14, 2013.

Awards

There will be 10 awards given:

Visionary (First prize)            
Inspirational (Second prize)
Enlightened (Third prize)         
Honorable mentions (7 prizes)

Submission Format

Students (individually or in groups) may use any artistic medium to convey their message. Submissions can be in any of the following formats:

  • A digital photograph (plus 150-200 word essay)
  • A short video (max 5 minutes)
  • A webpage (max 2 pages)
  • A musical recording (max 5 minutes)

There is no limit to creativity. Please check with organizers if you want to use a format different from one listed above.

Submission Details

[You]th Snap4Change, seeks to encourage youth to:

  • reflect on the life and environment of people in their immediate community
  • share one's ideas, thoughts and beliefs with others while being open to differing views and opinions
  • empathize with others
  • explore creative ways of communicating with others.

The vision of this project is to create a social environment in schools where youth play a prominent role in fostering an environment of acceptance and nurturing within a diverse population.

The goals of the project are to encourage youth to ask questions such as: What is conflict? What is peace? How do you resolve a conflict? How do you build peace in your school/neighborhood/community?

The main themes of [You]th Snap4Change are conflict and peace in your community and your everyday life.

Who is on the selection committee?

The selection committee is made up of students, staff and faculty at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The selection committee members are very familiar with the mission and vision of the Center for Conflict Studies and the [You]th Snap4Change program. All submissions will remain anonymous when being rated by the committee. Only the project coordinators (who will not be a part of the selection committee) will have access to the submission forms and therefore the identity of the participant. 

What does property of CCS mean?

Student artwork may be used or linked to on the website or brochures or publications of the Center for Conflict Studies. If we do use the artwork, students will ALWAYS be credited. Additionally, students may not submit this artwork to any other competition with in a year of submitting to [You]th Snap4Change. After that, students are free to use their submissions however they would like, but CCS still has the right to use the credited submissions for the Center’s purposes.

How many students can form a team for a group submission?

We can accept groups of up to 3 students.

Should all entries be submitted electronically? What about the submission form?

Yes, everything needs to be submitted electronically. We are not able to receive mail. The submission form also needs to be submitted electronically. Please print it out, fill the form out, scan it, and attach it to the same email that you use for your submission. If you need help with printing and scanning, please talk to your school or After School program.

If I win, will CCS be able to provide transportation to Monterey for my family as well?

Yes, if you are one of the top three, CCS will be able to provide transportation and lodging for the student. On a case-by-case basis and subject to the availability of funds, we might be able to support a family member who will travel with the student.

What are the technical specifications for the submissions?
All submissions must be sent to us via email at either youthsnap4change@gmail.com or snap4change@gmail.com. The submission should include the completed submission form. Here are the specific details for each type of submission:
  • Photo - attach a jpeg file with the photo to the email and attach the 150-200 word essay explaining the photo.
  • Short video - Please create the video and upload it to YouTube (see instructions below). Put the link to the YouTube video into the body of your submission email.
  • Website - Please include a link to the website in the body of your email.
  • Musical Recording - Please send us the recording either as an mpg file attached to the email or through YouTube, with the link to the video in the body of your submission email.
  • If you decide to use another format, please just contact us to make sure the format will be approved and then we can give you the technical specification of how to send the submission to us.
YouTube instructions: Follow the directions for uploading a video to YouTube that are provided with whatever editing software you are using or on the YouTube website. On the video dashboard, click on the small padlock symbol next to your video. This will take you to the privacy settings. Set the privacy settings to "unlisted". That allows us to view the link, but the submission is unsearchable. After the competition, you may switch the privacy setting to public if you wish to do so. Copy and paste the "Video URL" into your submission email. This appears on the same privacy settings page.
