About

Funded by a generous grant from the Loker Foundation, the Center for the Blue Economy (CBE) combines professional graduate education and research to promote the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources.
With an ever increasing share of the world’s population and economic activity occurring in coastal zones and relying on ocean resources, there is urgent and rising demand for marine policy professionals with the skills to tackle many complex challenges.

As part of the Monterey Institute’s International Environmental Policy (IEP) degree program, the CBE will launch a concentration in Ocean and Coastal Resource Management in fall 2012, which will combine the traditional study of marine law, science, and policy with new coursework in ocean and coastal economics and sustainable coastal management. Students enrolled in this program will also have access to a world class research program, and the unparalleled marine science and policy resources at neighboring institutions, providing a unique opportunity for a comprehensive graduate experience.
CBE faculty and staff are distinguished in the areas of environmental and natural resource economics, conservation biology, energy policy, and sustainable development. The CBE will add to this expertise by hiring prominent new faculty in marine science, policy and law, as well as host an annual conference and speaker series at the Institute.
