Japanese

The Japanese program is the only graduate program in the United States that offers Master of Arts degrees in Conference Interpretation (MACI), Translation and Interpretation (MATI), Translation (MAT), as well as in Translation and Localization Management (MATLM) in the Japanese-English language combination.

The Japanese program in Translation, Interpretation, and Localization Management is proud to offer vigorous curriculum to teach the students necessary skill set to be competitive in the global interpreting and translation market. In a small classroom environment (the faculty-student ratio is typically 1 to 12), our highly experienced professors are dedicated to the students’ professional education.

The ratio of native English and Japanese speakers in our program is optimally balanced, which enables peer linguistic feedback and a more dynamic academic environment.

Our interpreting and translation curriculum currently covers a wide variety of topics and materials, including economics, politics, IT, patent, medical, and business.

In addition to the regular courses, the Japanese program regularly holds its own consecutive interpreting practicum to enhance their consecutive interpreting skills in a real-life setting. We are also very active in inviting guest speakers and holding workshops on translation and interpreting.

The students have opportunities to work as interns in a number of high-profile institutions and corporations during the summer break, such as Honda, WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), and Kyodo Tsushin. With our Career Adviser’s vigorous career support, our graduates are successfully employed by prominent companies and organizations, including Honda, Google, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals, Nikon, Bloomberg, U.S. Department of State, SMBC Nikko Securities, and academic institutions such as Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Rikkyo University.  For more information on internship and career opportunities, click here.

We have a very strong alumni network and hold reunion regularly to strengthen our professional network. For information about our students and alumni activities, please visit our official Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MIISTIJapanesepage

Internship and Job Opportunities

The Translation program connects students with internships and jobs at high-profile companies such as Apple, World Bank, and the FBI.

Featured Student: Satoko Kanamori

Undergrad: New York University

Fun Fact: I have perfect pitch

Satoko Kanamori's is no stranger to world travel, thanks to her advanced language translation skills.

Originally calling both Tokyo and New York her home, she ventured to the Monterey Institute for our unique Translation and Interpretation program, (and also for "the beautiful scenery!") Before coming to the Institute, she worked as a proofreader and translator.

Satoko says that what she likes most about her program is getting to "explore the different disciplines within translation and interpretation and figure out what I like the most."

During the summer, Satoko took advantage of our Institute's internship program with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. Her responsibilities included translating parts of patents from Japanese into English. "The internship was definitely interesting", said Satoko, "and I’m proud that my translations will be published later!

Satoko's dream job is to work in literary translation.
