The Chinese program in Translation, Interpretation, and Localization Management is the world’s foremost training ground for translators, conference interpreters, and localization experts.

Our faculty include world-renowned literary translators, T&I scholars, pedagogical leaders and conference interpreters who have many years of professional and academic experience and continue to be active in their respective fields. Faculty members have specialized in the courses they teach, and they work closely together to guide and prepare our students for their future careers.  Job opportunities abound for our graduates, such as managing localization projects for Silicon Valley giants like Apple and Google, translating technical manuals or literary volumes, interpreting in high-profile events like UN conferences, US-China state visits, the Olympics, APEC and WTO Ministerial Meetings, as well as a wide-range of government, non-government, business and hi-tech events.

The Chinese TILM program equips students with the latest skill sets for pursuing a career in Translation, Translation and Interpretation, Conference Interpretation, or Translation and Localization Management. All the courses in the Chinese program are content-based and market-oriented, with a balanced emphasis on a wide variety of topics such as contemporary literature, law, international relations and politics, economics, environmental protection, energy, intellectual property rights, trade and commerce, medicine, and technology. These courses draw expertise from all of the faculty members in the Chinese program who specialize in different sectors of the profession.

Undergrad: National Taiwan University
Fun Fact: I can't operate blinds. I raise them and can't lower them back down. (Why has this country not heard of curtains?)

What attracted you to Monterey's T&I program?

My professors from my undergrad all agreed that if I wanted to study T&I abroad, MIIS is the place to do it.

What were you doing before you came to MIIS?
I was doing my mandatory military service in Taiwan. Suffice to say, it gave me a whole new appreciation of being in school.

What do you like most about your program?
Being around very driven, very hardworking people. It's hard to be lazy!

You recently won the 2013 Televic Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpreting Competition in England. Can you describe that experience?

It was very... jet-lagged. I only had one day to acclimate, and on the first day of the competition I woke up at 3 am. It did work out for the best, since I'm usually a terrible morning person, and by the time the competition began at 10 my body thought it was already mid-afternoon. Of course it also meant that I wasn't in much of a celebratory mood--all I could think of when the competition was over was how nice it would be to go to bed!

Your dream job:
Being a freelance interpreter. It's why I'm here!
