Translation & Interpretation Facilities
The Monterey Institute has classrooms equipped with real-life conference interpreting systems for simultaneous interpretation, translation, and interpretation classes, which are also made available for student practice.
Simultaneous Labs
Interpreting students have access to three rooms equipped for simultaneous interpretation: a conference room with eight booths conforming to International Standards Organization (ISO) specifications, and two training facilities with 12 booths each. A state of the art interpreting system which allows the use of teaching materials in both digital and analogue formats has recently been installed in one of the 12-booth labs that has brought the Monterey Institute's facilities to a new level. In addition, Gentner portable "whisper" interpreting equipment can transform any classroom into a multilingual seminar, giving students further opportunities to provide and practice interpretation for Institute classes and events.
Multimedia Language Lab
The Monterey Institute multi-media translation and interpretation lab (MML), where students take classes in sight translation, translation and simultaneous interpretation, is equipped with locally networked Pentium-based PC computers integrated with the Sony LLC-9000 language lab. The computers run on both the English/European and Asian Windows language platforms and are equipped with a comprehensive array of word- and data-processing applications, software that allows access to cable and satellite video distribution, and full Internet connectivity.
These computers are also configured to run computer-assisted terminology management and sentence-memory tools as well as the LOGOS® machine translation system. An example of the emerging technologies that Monterey has to offer is the creation of a speech bank for making foreign-language speeches available for student practice via the Intranet, and the establishment of the Globalization Research Center (GRC), which monitors developments in translation technology and related applications.
Auditorium Interpretation Booths
The Monterey Institute's Irvine Auditorium is the site of international conferences, multilingual courses, and guest presentations. It has four built-in simultaneous interpreting booths and a seating capacity of 275.
Software & Other Resources
The Monterey Institute has courses such as Computer Assisted Translation, Website Localization, Software Localization and Terminology Management. Students learn to use Trados, Multi-term, Star Transit, Passolo, WebBudget, Adobe Web Bundle, etc. to resolve real world issues.
Interpretation students are provided with software that allow them to practice consecutive and simultaneous interpretation on their laptops.
