Language Teaching Internships
Students from our language teaching programs take advantage of many opportunities - both in Monterey and around the world - to practice their craft.
B.U.I.L.D. Language Club
B.U.I.L.D. (Beyond yoUrself In Language Development) is your opportunity to volunteer to put theory into practice and gain teaching experience during the semester. This student language club offers free beginning-level foreign language courses on campus every Friday. These courses are taught to students by students in nine or ten languages, ranging from French to Bulgarian, whatever the MA students are able to teach!
You'll plan lessons, gather materials, and gain valuable feedback from real-life learners. And don't forget - you're welcome to be a student too! After all, the best way to learn is to observe others in action...
Teaching Practicum
The Language Teaching Practicum, a course taken towards the end of your Master's degree program, promotes personal and professional development by sharing, unpacking, and analyzing teaching experiences from a variety of viewpoints. Students choose a real world context that matches their interests and goals, such as teaching one of the Institute’s intensive language courses or a language class at a local school or university. Some students complete the practicum during the summer at the Concordia Language Villages in Minnesota, the Chilean government’s English program in Santiago, or private language schools in Japan or Albania.
Work on Campus
Language teaching students can also apply for positions as teachers, activity coordinators, and teaching assistants for the Summer Intensive Language Programs and Intensive English Programs. We also welcome you to apply to be an instructor in our Custom Language Programs.
Course Projects
In addition to these practica, there are opportunities throughout your degree program to work on real world projects. For example, a recent Curriculum Design course could choose from the following projects:
- Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy ESL Program
- World Teach's English Language Programs in Ecuador and the Marshall Islands
- Fullbright Program's English Preparation Courses
- Kanda University's Intensive English Exchange Program
- Seaside Peace Resource Center
