About the Program
Globalization, a new idea in the 20th century, is a 21st century reality. Businesses struggle with the tensions of globalization and localization and how to best work with and interact with emerging economies.
The landscape for business in the 21st century has become increasingly complex. Globalization, a new idea in the 20th century, is a 21st century reality. Businesses struggle with the tensions of globalization and localization and how to best work with and interact with emerging economies. The 20th century concept of clean abundant energy and resources has transformed into a 21st century reality of competition and scarcity. Companies that once only had a chief executive officer (CEO) and chief financial officer (CFO) are now adding chief sustainability officers (CSO) at the vice-president level or higher who shape corporate environmental programs and policies. Entrepreneurs rather than large established businesses now create the bulk of new jobs and wealth in the economy. While traditional skills taught by MBA programs are still necessary, they are no longer sufficient.
The Fisher International MBA program is an integral part of the Graduate School of International Policy and Management at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. We are at the intersection of business, sustainability and development. We teach the functional courses expected for success in business, such as marketing, finance, accounting, economics, quantitative methods for business analysis and operations management. We also teach courses designed to help professionals function in the new socio-economic and political realities in which 21st century businesses operate. Some of these courses reside in the business program, such as entrepreneurship, country and political risk analysis, creativity and innovation and marketing in emerging nations. Students can also take courses, such as business models for sustainable development, social innovation investment, and U.S.-China trade relations from other programs.
The Fisher International MBA program is proud of the integrative immersive educational experiences we provide for our students. In the capstone International Business Plan, students consult for client companies and organizations ranging from start-up entrepreneurs to high-tech giants such as Hewlett-Packard, Cisco and Sun Microsystems. Students work in cross-cultural cross-functional teams to solve real-world business problems. In the Frontier Market Scouts program, students are trained to become investment managers seeking promising local entrepreneurs in low-income/weak-capital regions of the world, and link them with impact investors. This year’s program included frontier market scouts in Tanzania, Vietnam, Nigeria and India. Another new immersive initiative focuses on working with nascent Latino entrepreneurs in California’s Central Valley.
The diverse cross-cultural Monterey Institute experience prepares our graduates with the skills, perspectives and contacts to successfully function in the international business community. Our students come from around the world and our graduates pursue successful careers in the U.S. and abroad. I encourage you to visit us and to determine if the Fisher International MBA program is the right learning experience for you.
