Meet Our Program Chair

Sandra Dow, MBA in Global Impact Management Program Chair

The Fisher MBA in Global Impact Management trains principled leaders and creative problem-solvers to build businesses that can overcome the 21st century challenges to sustainable growth.

Welcome to the Fisher MBA in Global Impact Management! At the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a Graduate School of Middlebury College, you will have the opportunity to be part of a frontier program that recognizes that the new challenges facing business require nimble out-of-the-box solutions. This is your opportunity to “Be the Solution” in a creative and meaningful way.

Business in the 21st century faces unparalleled challenges that break down the borders of the traditional firm. While strong business fundamentals are necessary for tomorrow’s leaders, insight, vision, and both willingness and ability to engage a broad range of non-financial stakeholders will be the key to creating long-term sustainable competitive advantage. Traditional business disciplines of finance, marketing, accounting, decision sciences, strategy and economics afford sophisticated solutions to the financial and operational risks that a business faces on a daily basis. However a silo approach to business problems today is neither sufficient nor adequate. Strong business skills are the launch pad of our MBA in Global Impact Management.

Insight, vision, and both willingness and ability to engage a broad range of non-financial stakeholders will be the key to creating long-term sustainable competitive advantage.

The Fisher MBA in Global Impact Management emphasizes business management in the context of global issues-driven challenges and changes. Similar to pivoting on international business education thirty-five years ago at the onset of globalization; the understanding that global challenges like climate change, population growth and urbanization, raw materials and energy shortage, extreme inequality, and global terrorism increasingly threaten the long-term viability of mainstream businesses and pressure them to manage the associated risks, forms a cornerstone for our new MBA program. 21st century problems demand 21st century solutions both in terms of content and pedagogy. Our completely redesigned MBA program provides students with an integrated and comprehensive curriculum that highlights team teaching and a raw case approach.

Students can choose between our One Year (12-month) MBA or 20-month MBA. The first year of the 20-month MBA includes in-depth business fundamentals plus room for electives and possibility of an international study trip in the spring semester. Summer allows you to build your resume through securing relevant internships. Two-year students then join the One-Year (12 month) MBA cohort for advanced business classes in program tracks:

  1. Resilient Business Management, focusing on risk management for mainstream businesses under global challenges;
  2. Social Enterprise and Finance, focusing on the management and financing of the new breed of businesses born or chartered to deliver social or environmental bottom lines and operate far beyond corporate social responsibility; and
  3. Corporate Risk Management and Compliance, focusing on fraud detection and compliance management in businesses.

We also offer joint degrees with International Environmental Policy and International Policy and Development that allow students to delve even further into the interactions of business and society.

Your time in the Fisher Global Impact Management MBA will give you the confidence and breadth and depth of business skills to set you apart from crowd. Our achievements are already proving the strength of our new curriculum and the quality of our select group of MBA candidates from our success at the World Economic Forum in Davos to becoming finalists in the Aspen MBA case competition to winning top prize as Innovator of the Year in our own backyard in Monterey…not to mention the strong finish by our own Frontier Market Scouts alumni at the Hult International Competition this past March!

The Fisher MBA in Global Impact Management is proud of our new curriculum designed specifically to address the new fuzzy boundaries that characterize the contemporary business environment. Small classes (with a student to faculty ratio of eight to one), team-teaching, raw cases and unique capstone experiences ranging from real consulting experiences, to assignments through Frontier Market Scouts; your practical path to “Being the Solution” will give you the opportunity to hone your skills in operating in a less certain world, whether the uncertainty is caused by geography, culture, or a dynamic global trend.
