Intl Education Directed Study

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a local international education project. The fieldwork project will include an academic research component as well as extensive hands-on work with a local program. This course may be taken up to three times for credit.

Campus Internationalization

With an emphasis on the latest research findings, this course will help students identify best practices, exemplar programs, challenges, and benefits in the growing movement towards campus internationalization.

Advising in Multicultural Setting

Focusing on advising roles in international education, this course will teach students communication and advising techniques for use in one-on-one advising sessions. Course materials and discussion will focus on confidentiality and its limits, how to make referrals, responding to students in crisis, and cultural differences in attitudes about counseling. Role play situations will allow students to practice techniques.

International Education Policy

This course examines the role of national and international policy in shaping international education. Course topics include among others, U.S. policies related to international exchange and aid for education in developing countries, the impetus and outcomes of the European Union Bologna Process, and the worldwide push toward the internationalization of higher education.

International Education Marketing/Recruiting

Focusing on revenue generation, this course examines strategies for marketing, recruitment, and enrollment management in the study abroad, ESL/language school, and international student services sectors. Topics include the principles of marketing, defining your market segment, competitor analysis, developing marketing plans and budgets, social media and localization of marketing campaigns, data analysis, accreditation and rankings, alumni role in recruitment, internal and external collaborations, working with U.S. and international governments, and ethical dilemmas in recruitment.

Principles & Practices of International Education

This foundational course will introduce students to the breadth of the international education field. Course content will emphasize fundamental principles of international education through a focus on seminal literature in the field. Additionally, the course will emphasize exploration of career specializations through interactions with practitioners and individual course assignments.

Fieldwork Project

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a local international education project. The fieldwork project will include an academic research component as well as extensive hands-on work with a local program. This course may be taken up to three times for credit.

Best Practices in Study Abroad and International Exchange

Through reading of the literature and extensive interactions with practitioners, students will explore study abroad models, student advising, orientation programs, financial aid issues, challenges of academic credit transfer, benefits of study abroad, faculty-led programs, risk management strategies, institutional partnership establishment, and growth of the work/intern/volunteer abroad sector.

International Student and Scholar Services

Exploring the role of international student and school services (ISSS) offices in U.S. higher education, this course will explore the research and best practices in relation to orientation programs; academic and social integration of international students, scholars, and their families; ISSS office structures; U.S. visa types and immigrations regulations; restrictions on employment; and the role of the international student and scholar advisor.

Staff Management in International Context

Examining the complexities of staff management in international and multinational contexts, this course will include discussion of job description development, advertisement, selection processes, salary setting and negotiation, coaching, discipline, labor laws and workers’ rights, and managing remote teams.

Comparative International Education

This course offers an introduction to the breadth of educational systems and structures around the world, and the cultural, historical, philosophical, and economic forces that shape these systems. Additional topics to be studied include the effects of globalization on education systems; the role of international organizations and NGOs in the provision of formal and non-formal education; and issues of diversity, access, and inclusion as they manifest internationally.

International Education Program Design and Assessment

This project-based course provides an opportunity for students to study the stages of program development as well as learn and practice assessment methods. Students put their learning into practice through creation of a program proposal and assessment plan and instruments.

Student Services

This course will introduce best practices, codes of conduct, and exemplars for a wide-range of student services including Records, Financial Aid, Admissions/Enrollment Management, Academic Advising, Orientation Programs, Career Services, Health Center, Counseling Center, Residential Life, Student Affairs, Employment Office, Judicial Affairs, Alumni relations, etc. Interactions between these office and international education offices will be explored.

Higher Education Administration

Viewing higher education administration through the lenses of campus business offices, student services, and academic programs, systems theory will be used to examine power structures and decision-making in higher education.

Conflict Resolution and Negotiation in the Workplace

This course provides an in-depth analysis of interpersonal and cross-cultural approaches to negotiation and conflict resolution in a workplace setting. The course provides strategies for managing difficult situations.

Workshop: Inventories for assessing intercultural communication skills

Training students on available inventories for assessing intercultural communication skills and intercultural competency, this workshop provides additional tools for graduates to use in the management and assessment of international exchange programs.

Workshop: Grant-writing and proposal writing

Students will learn techniques for effective grant-writing and proposal writing.

Workshop: Facilitating intercultural training and orientation

This interactive workshop introduces students to training techniques for facilitating intercultural training sessions and/or orientation programs.

Workshop: Advancement and Fundraising

This workshop provides an introduction to the advancement field and will enable graduates to work collaboratively and effectively with their organization’s advancement officers.

Workshop: Working with Interpreters and Translators

This hands-on workshop will help participants understand the types of interpretation and translation services available in the marketplace. Students will get advice on how to select an interpreter or translator and learn how to work with the interpreter or translator successfully. Students will practice giving presentations and hosting events which are being interpreted.
