IEM Course Descriptions

International Education Management students have the opportunity to take courses from many programs, including Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Public Administration, Language & Intercultural Studies, and Business Administration. Below are the courses offered by the International Education Management program.

Core Courses

Principles & Practices of International Education (IEMG 8500)

This foundational course will introduce students to the breadth of the international education field. Course content will emphasize fundamental principles of international education through a focus on seminal literature in the field. Additionally, the course will emphasize exploration of career specializations through interactions with practitioners and individual course assignments.

International Education Program Design and Assessment (IEMG 8510)

This project-based course provides an opportunity for students to study the stages of program development as well as learn and practice assessment methods. Students put their learning into practice through creation of a program proposal and assessment plan and instruments.

International Education Marketing/Recruiting (IEMG 8520)

Focusing on revenue generation, this course examines strategies for marketing, recruitment, and enrollment management in the study abroad, ESL/language school, and international student services sectors. Topics include the principles of marketing, defining your market segment, competitor analysis, developing marketing plans and budgets, social media and localization of marketing campaigns, data analysis, accreditation and rankings, alumni role in recruitment, internal and external collaborations, working with U.S. and international governments, and ethical dilemmas in recruitment.

Comparative International Education (IEMG 8530)

This course offers an introduction to the breadth of educational systems and structures around the world, and the cultural, historical, philosophical, and economic forces that shape these systems. Additional topics to be studied include the effects of globalization on education systems; the role of international organizations and NGOs in the provision of formal and non-formal education; and issues of diversity, access, and inclusion as they manifest internationally.

Staff Management in an International Context (IEMG 8540)

This course provides an overview of the operational and strategic considerations and issues of staff management in an international organization. The course is oriented from the practitioner’s perspective with relevant case studies. Students will examine the complexities of staff management in international and multinational contexts. The course has a practical focus and will include discussion of job description development, advertisement, selection processes, salary setting and negotiation, coaching, discipline, labor laws and workers’ rights, and managing remote teams.  

Budgeting in Educational Organizations (IEMG 8550)

An introduction to the theory and practice of budgeting and financial management with a focus on educational organizations. The course introduces the student to a broad array of budget issues relevant to successful management of educational organizations. The course will examine the role of the budget manager, primary budget elements, phases of the budget cycle, and interpersonal skills necessary for effective financial management. The course will be conducted using lecture and case study methods requiring active student participation.

International Education Management Practicum (IEMG 8650)

While undertaking an approved professional practicum in the International Education Management field, students will be responsible for rigorous academic performance, equivalent in quantity and quality to the requirements for equivalent on-campus coursework. Students will demonstrate their application of theory to practice through completion of multiple deliverables.

Elective Courses

Study Abroad & International Exchange (IEMG 8610)

Through reading of the literature and extensive interactions with practitioners, students will explore study abroad models, student advising, orientation programs, financial aid issues, challenges of academic credit transfer, benefits of study abroad, faculty-led programs, risk management strategies, institutional partnership establishment, and growth of the work/intern/volunteer abroad sector.

International Student & Scholar Services (IEMG 8620)

Exploring the role of international student and school services (ISSS) offices in U.S. higher education, this course will explore the research and best practices in relation to orientation programs; academic and social integration of international students, scholars, and their families; ISSS office structures; U.S. visa types and immigrations regulations; restrictions on employment; and the role of the international student and scholar advisor.

International Education Policy (IEMG 8600)

This course examines the role of national and international policy in shaping international education. Course topics include among others, U.S. policies related to international exchange and aid for education in developing countries, the impetus and outcomes of the European Union Bologna Process, and the worldwide push toward the internationalization of higher education.

Crossing Cultures (IEMG 8544)

This course will focus on the dynamics of crossing cultures. Through readings, discussion, and experiential activities, students will explore the challenges and processes of cultural adaptation. Examples will be drawn from immigrant stories, study abroad, and international business contexts.

Higher Education Administration (IEMG 8635)

Viewing higher education administration through the lenses of campus business offices, student services, and academic programs, systems theory will be used to examine power structures and decision-making in higher education.

Working with International Indigenous Communities (IEMG 8522)

Many international programs, including education programs, include a component of working with or near Indigenous communities. This course will introduce students to Indigenous worldviews from a comparative perspective. Students will develop an awareness of Indigenous ways of knowing, and some of the political, theoretical, and social contexts involved when working with Indigenous peoples. Course will also include an overview of some Indigenous practices and ceremonies, and provide opportunities to gain practical experience. Students will gain familiarity with how to work in and with Indigenous communities.

Biculturalism & Multiculturalism (IEMG 8562)

This course will focus on the experiences of people who identify as Bicultural or Multicultural. Through reading first-person accounts, engaging with experiential activities, and studying theories of identity development, the dynamics of biculturalism and multiculturalism will be explored. The course will conclude with recommendations for supporting individuals with bicultural and multicultural identities.

Educational Foundations (IEMG 8542)

This course is designed for non-teaching education professionals. It introduces basic terminology, theories and paradigms that have shaped contemporary educational practices. It covers two basic layers of education by 1) studying the phenomena of learning; 2) examining effective and efficient teaching and learning environments. The course will enable students to develop skills as practitioners of education and to better communicate about educational principles with teachers and administrators.

Exploring Perspectives on Intercultural Competence: From Theory to Practice (IEMG 8563)

What is intercultural competence? How this concept viewed from varying disciplinary and cultural perspectives? In order to be most effective in developing intercultural competence in others, it becomes imperative to gain a deeper understanding of this crucial concept in the 21st century. Given the over five decades of work on this concept by scholars, there is a plethora of definitions and frameworks around intercultural competence. This course explores a variety of perspectives on this concept, as well as practical implications in regard to development and assessment of intercultural competence.

Student Services (IEMG 8625)

This course will introduce best practices, codes of conduct, and exemplars for a wide-range of student services including Records, Financial Aid, Admissions/Enrollment Management, Academic Advising, Orientation Programs, Career Services, Health Center, Counseling Center, Residential Life, Student Affairs, Employment Office, Judicial Affairs, Alumni relations, etc. Interactions between these offices and international education offices will be explored.

Counseling Skills for Advisors (IEMG 8630)

Focusing on advising roles in international education, this course will teach students communication and advising techniques for use in one-on-one advising sessions. Course materials and discussion will focus on confidentiality and its limits, how to make referrals, responding to students in crisis, and cultural differences in attitudes about counseling. Role play situations will allow students to practice techniques.

Developing Intercultural Trainings in Organizations (IEMG 8560)

The workshop is a comprehensive, hands-on introduction on how to design intercultural training programs and gain the knowledge needed to design and deliver cross cultural awareness programs within organizations - whether they are educational, governmental, not-for-profit or for-profit. This workshop is designed for anyone working in domestic or global settings. Designing any training program requires specific sequencing, skills and techniques. Participants will learn methodologies of cross-cultural training design, how to analyze an audience, structure and deliver an effective cross-cultural training program. Students will have the opportunity to learn practical skills immediately applicable and increase their cross-cultural training capabilities. By learning these skills, students will expand their toolbox and become a greater asset to any organization.

Campus Internationalization (IEMG 8640)

With an emphasis on the latest research findings, this course will help students identify best practices, exemplar programs, challenges, and benefits in the growing movement towards campus internationalization.

International Education Directed Study (IEMG 8598)

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a local international education project. The fieldwork project will include an academic research component as well as extensive hands-on work with a local program. This course may be taken up to three times for credit.
