Complete a field project on a pressing issue in your field while maximizing contacts and resources from your host organization.

IPSS

Is an exciting professional work experience that combines demanding academic components with immersive learning in the field.  This program can be between four and sixth months in length (sometimes longer if the participant chooses) and is comprised of an optional 6-unit pre-departure professional training and one 6-unit field course.

Preparatory Work

  • Research on the assigned organization and relevant policy issues.
  • Internship search workshops and career advising.
  • Development of Terms of Reference (TOR) for a junior staff position with the organization, in consultation with IPSS faculty and career advisors.

Pre-Departure Professional Training (Optional)

The January pre-departure training covers:

  • Understanding host organizations and organizational perspective
  • Acquiring key consultancy skills
  • Research and project design
  • Essential excel, web, and social media tools
  • Interpersonal communication and public speaking skills
  • Insights and lessons from distinguished practitioners and IPSS alumni

Field Project

The main academic component of the program is an ambitious field project completed by IPSS fellows while on their assignment.  The field projects should benefit the host organizations and help fellows apply and advance the skills and expertise essential for their career aspirations. IPSS fellows will benefit from peer feedback and faculty mentor guidance while working on their projects.

Final Presentation

All IPSS fellows will present their field project deliverables to their respective organizations by August.

Select faculty and interested students will watch a video recording of this presentation, followed by a remote video conference feedback session the IPSS fellows in mid-August.
