Summer Intensive Japanese Program

Elementary Japanese

The elementary class is designed for students with no or minimal knowledge of Japanese. The class uses a communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. In conjuction with the textbook and audio materials that accompany the textbook, we will make use of a variety of authentic audio and video resources to ensure significant exposure to the language. Students will be introduced to the Japanese pronunciation, writing system, basic grammar for the purpose of communication, reading and writing simple texts, through participation in games, functional and communicative activities, and tasks.

Intermediate Japanese

The intermediate class is designed for students with at least one year of recent college-level Japanese studies. The class uses a communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. In conjunction with the textbook and audio materials that accompany the textbook, we will make use of a variety of authetic audio and video resources to ensure significant exposure to the language. Students will have opportunities to practice formal and informal communication skills in Japanese with their peers and with native speakers, further develop their grammatical and structural knowledge of the language, and use their critical thinking skills to engage in real-life situations such as problem solving in Japanese. The instruction is designed to improve students' overall ability to understand and use the language appropriately.

Advanced Japanese

The advanced class is designed for students with at least two years  of recent college-level Japanese studies. The class uses a communicative approach to engage students in the learning process.  In conjunction with the textbook and audio materials that accompany the textbook, we will make use of a variety of authetic audio and video resources to ensure significant exposure to the language. Students will have opportunities to practice formal and informal communication skills in Japanese with their peers and with native speakers, further develop their grammatical and structural knowledge of the language, and use their critical thinking skills to engage in real-life situations such as problem solving in Japanese. The instruction is designed to improve students' overall ability to understand and use the language appropriately.  Students will be exposed different levels of speech, honorific/humble use of language, current issues discussions using media, etc.
