Summer Intensive French Program

Elementary French

The elementary class is designed for students with no or minimal knowledge of French. The class uses an integrated, communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. Students will be exposed to basic grammar, vocabulary, and cultural information, and will have many opportunities to produce the language in speaking and writing. Students will read material from authentic French sources, listen to TV broadcasts, write short essays and give oral presentations. The goal of the program is to improve students' overall ability to understand and use the language as well as become familiar with the culture of French-speaking countries.

Intermediate French

The intermediate class is designed for students with at least one year of recent college-level French studies. Students are required to take a placement exam that tests their proficiency in both oral and written French at the start of the program. Placement is determined by students' language proficiency level, not the length of their previous studies.

The intermediate class uses an integrated, communicative approach to engage students in the learning process. Students will be exposed to intermediate and advanced level grammar structures and vocabulary, and will have many opportunities to produce the language in speaking and writing. Students will read materials from authentic French sources, listen to TV broadcasts, write essays and give oral presentations. The focus of the program is to further improve students' ability to understand and use the language.
