Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

Where will your language skills take you?

For as long as the Institute has been in existence, the Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP) has offered motivated foreign language students an intensive and supportive environment to gain a solid foundation or improve overall proficiency in a language. Our SILP instructors are highly committed and seek to instill in their students an appreciation of the target language and culture.

Program Highlights

  • 2016 Dates: June 16 - August 10
  • Beginning, intermediate and advanced level programs*
  • Average class size is 8; classes range from 6-12 students
  • 8 credits granted for completion of the program
  • 4.5 hours of classroom instruction per day
  • 3-5 hours of homework per night
  • Weekly activities and tutoring designed to increase learning outside of the classroom
  • Students who complete the program will have a transcript available and will receive a completion certificate from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

Outside of the Classroom

In addition to in-class instruction led by native or near native speakers with advanced degrees and extensive teaching experience, the program also gives students access to tutors who provide additional opportunities for language practice.

In order to enable students to learn more about the language and the culture of their target language, SILP provides students with a wide variety of co-curricular activities. These activities, which often include field trips, give students the chance to experience the culture and practice the language in an authentic setting.

Academic Credit

It is possible to receive up to 8 semester units of undergraduate credit for the program, and MIIS graduate students can potentially satisfy 4 units of graduate-level language requirements. Levels are assessed in accordance with the proficiency guidelines of the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Program participants will have a transcript available and will receive a completion certificate from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Life after a Summer of Language in Monterey

We believe that the true measure of our success lies in the number of students who continue studying their target language after they graduate from our summer program.

Participants use the language skills acquired during their summer study in a number of ways:

  • Return for additional study in a graduate degree program at the Institute
  • Study or travel abroad to deepen understanding of language and culture
  • Use the language to advance professionally
  • Fulfill language requirements at other educational institutions

*All levels are determined based on enrollment. Certain levels are guaranteed while others remain tentatively offered until sufficient enrollment is reached. For more information, please contact languages@miis.edu.
