Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey
Does the Institute have on-campus housing or dormitories for SILP students?

The Institute does not have on-campus housing or dormitories available for students. This can cause some dismay for Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP) participants, but not to worry! There are several options available for summer housing.

Official MIIS Housing Facebook Group: By far, the most common source of housing is from subletting the apartment of a current MIIS graduate student. Most of our graduate students leave for the summer and sublet their apartments to incoming SILP students.

The official MIIS Housing Facebook Group is the principal resource used by students to list a summer sublet. If you don’t have Facebook, don’t fret! Contact the SILP office at silp@miis.edu as soon as possible to let us know so we can discuss an alternate solution.

MIIS Housing Website: Additionally, you will have access to the MIIS Off-Campus Housing website. This website contains listings only available to MIIS students. You should have received information about how to logon to the housing website in an email from Student Services or the SILP office, depending on whether or not you're an incoming MIIS student or just here for the summer.

Monterey Bay Craigslist: Craigslist is a community website that has many kinds of ads, including ads for people who are looking for housing. To find a room for rent, go to: “Rooms/shared.” To find an empty apartment, go to: “Apts/Housing.” To find a short-term rental, go to: “Sublets/Temporary.”

Please be careful using Craigslist. Although most of the ads are legitimate, some may be dishonest or even unsafe. Do not give out your personal information over email, and do not send or receive money from anyone you have not met.

Airbnb: Airbnb has become a popular way for people to find temporary vacation housing, but it's also possible to sometimes find long term solutions. If you're only going to be in Monterey for the summer, check out the Monterey Airbnb page for potential availabilites.

Temporary Lodging: You may need temporary lodging when you arrive, in which case you may also want to refer to the MIIS Student Services Lodging page for temporary accommodations as various lodging establishments in the community offer special rates /discounts for MIIS students.
