Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

French

The language of the L'Académie française, as well as French as it is spoken today, are indispensable for work in international aid and development, an introduction to the European Union, and a source of life-long cultural enrichment. Our program offers you the opportunity to challenge yourself and explore your passion for French in a language learning environment unlike any other.

French is Voltaire, Chanel, Renoir and all the cultural glories of La Belle France. At the same time, it is vibrant and global, a primary and administrative language from West Africa, Southeast Asia, Canada, and the Caribbean to the boulevards and banlieues of Paris.

The Summer Intensive French Program marries the critical lexical elements of French with the cultural nuance of the larger Francophone world. Students in the program come from a variety of background and regions, but are all united for the summer in their goal to heighten cultural and linguistic fluency.

In the classroom, relevant topics and real world materials are explored through integrated activities and group work. Outside of the classroom, activities center around communication with native speakers, exploring cultural traditions from Francophone countries, and taking advantage of the beautiful and peaceful language learning environment offered on the Monterey Peninsula.
