High-Level Language and Intercultural Competency for Diplomatic Negotiations

This workshop is designed for international relations professionals seeking to enhance their language and intercultural skills in high-level diplomatic contexts. A customized, fast-paced training program, the workshop culminates in a negotiation simulation in which participants navigate and strategize for the negotiation process, use competitive or collaborative language as appropriate to negotiation goals, and communicate effectively across cultures in the culturally challenging situation of negotiation.

This course is designed for doing. You will not be learning about language and negotiation as much as you will be using language in a negotiation situation. You will be analyzing a real-world conflict or issue, investigating the problems needing resolution, and strategizing for a negotiation process that seeks to find a mutually beneficial outcome. You will learn the appropriate language forms for the various phases of negotiation, negotiation procedure, relationship and rapport building, competitive bargaining and collaborative problem-solving. The work in this course is collaborative and team-centered.

Meet Your Instructors

Lisa Donohue Luscombe

Lisa Donohoe Luscombe, MATESOL, is Academic Coordinator and Curriculum Specialist for Custom Language Services, Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS). She has extensive experience in developing and teaching courses in English language and international relations issues, including diplomacy, nonproliferation, international trade, and other high-context content areas. She has also developed online courses and holds a certificate in online teaching from the Online Learning Consortium and a certificate from the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication. An educator and language specialist for more than 30 years, Ms. Luscombe has provided teacher-training workshops for Tomsk Polytechnic University in Russia and for high school teachers from Russia’s closed cities; she has developed English language curricula for diplomats in Custom Language Services at MIIS, the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy, and the Korean National Diplomatic Academy; and she has trained visiting scholars from the ministry of foreign affairs and academia from a variety of countries for more than 12 years while at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at MIIS. She has worked with professional-level students from Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union, the Caucasus, India and Pakistan, the Middle East, Africa, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Haiti, and others.


Peter Fordos


Peter Fordos is an intercultural consultant, trainer and coach who specializes in global leadership development. Drawing on first-hand experience, Peter offers an insider’s look at the mindset and business practices of corporations around the world. He works with Fortune 500 companies as a consultant, facilitator and intercultural coach. Peter has worked with: 3M, Apple, Audi, Avery Dennison, Boeing, Bombardier, Bosch, Chrysler, Dell, Disney, General Motors, Graebel, Honeywell, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Tetra Pak, Travelers Insurance, Valero and many other global companies. In addition, he has worked with the US Military, including the Navy Seals and the Special Boat Team. Peter Fordos was born in the former Czechoslovakia and has been based in the USA since 2001. Peter has conducted training and speaking engagements with a focus on working in multicultural teams, leadership across cultural and business practices, covering a range of countries worldwide.  He’s a faculty member at the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and an active member of the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research.
