Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

CLS prepares global professionals to engage effectively in multi-cultural and multilingual environments.

Our History

For over 60 years, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey has been using its skilled and knowledgeable faculty to develop high-performing, internationally minded professionals. Custom Language Services has been part of the Institute's long history of providing high-quality programs to exceptional clients from across the globe.

Our Philosophy

Language for international communication is unlike any other form of communication, requiring nuance, eloquence, and precision. Nations, industries, and in some cases, peoples’ lives depend upon the effectiveness of this communication.

In today's global society, those who can interpret social and linguistic cues, understand the subtlety of a negotiation, and speak dynamically and with confidence in a second or third language have a considerable advantage over those who cannot. These considerations have guided the development of each of our language programs and serve as the foundation for meaningful, relevant, and stimulating program design.

We understand that, for some, it is not just about learning a language; it is about using the language to make a impact in the world.

Our Approach

Relevant, Meaningful and Stimulating Learning

At CLS, whether we are developing a course for one individual or designing a program for an organization, we use a holistic approach to curriculum design that emphasizes the development of practical skills deployed in such authentic contexts as conference presentations, business meetings, negotiations, as well as leadership and organizational management scenarios.

Coursework combines critical language skills development with simulations that involve cutting edge conversations in areas relevant to the client's needs, with topics such as finance and economics, commerce and development, international marketing, sustainable business, and emerging technologies.

Industry content is drawn from relevant, real-world situations with expert interviews and guest speaker series that help professionals use their skills to communicate deftly and persuasively in a variety of contexts.

Our Services

We offer on-site, off-site, and online language and cross-cultural training, curriculum design, and “in-house” program development. We work with individuals and organizations to identify specific language and intercultural training needs, and design programs that align with personal and professional goals.

Our level of customization, our field-specific approach, and our language-teaching and program-design experience are the reasons CLS clients are so successful in reaching their language goals. We focus on the application of practical skills through the use of authentic materials and real-world simulations.

As part of our program design services, we offer consultation to companies and organizations interested in developing or evaluating in-house language and cross-cultural training programs. Contact Alicia Brent at abrent@miis.edu for more information about our consulting services.

Consulting Services Include:

  • Needs assessment and/or program evaluation
  • Program design and piloting
  • Material development and assessment
  • Teacher training and train-the-trainer programs

*Trainings can be conducted in-company or at our Monterey (CA) and Washington DC locations.
