Language Programs
Languages have played a central role at the Monterey Institute since its founding, and they remain an important component of all our academic programs. We offer a spectrum of both degree and non-degree language-learning options.
Our graduate degree programs integrate language into the core curricula enabling students to reach across cultural and linguistic barriers towards more global career opportunities. The Language Studies Programs in the graduate school are typically content-based, focusing on professionally-relevant content areas such as politics, business, policy, environment, and social issues.
For individuals who would like to improve their English language skills for communication, academic preparation, or business, we have a non-degree Intensive ESL Program that offers group language instruction to international students and immigrants. English learners may come for one session as a study abroad experience, or stay for multiple sessions before transferring on to an American college or university. ESL sessions start four times a year, and immigration assistance is available.
The Monterey Institute's already international student profile is further enhanced by diplomats on campus who are enrolled in our English for Diplomats programs. These programs offer academic-year long, as well as short intensive options for small groups and individuals. An integrated content and skills-based curriculum allows participants to develop skills and deal with topics relevant to the field of diplomacy.
Students from both academic and professional backgrounds can participate in our Summer Intensive Language Program offering eight weeks of instruction in five languages. Participants can earn twelve undergraduate semester units. Monterey Institute graduate students can potentially satisfy four units of graduate-level language requirements through the summer program.
For those looking for something more individualized, our Custom Language Services offer tailor-made programs designed for both professional and personal enrichment. Clients can choose the length and intensity of their program and determine the program dates. Both common and less-common languages are taught through these individual and small group programs.
