Professor
Before joining The Monterey Institute of International Studies in 1986 I taught at the University of Northern Iowa and in Britain, Peru, Mexico, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands. Currently I am Professor (Educational Linguistics) in the Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation and Language Education at MIIS. Over the years I have been visiting Professor at several universities, including Thames Valley University in London, The University of Lleida, Spain, The University of Auckland in New Zealand, and The University of Vienna.
I am the author of several books, including Scaffolding the academic success of adolescent English language learners (2010, with Aída Walqui); The ecology and semiotics of language learning (2004); Interaction in the language curriculum (1996); Introducing language awareness (1995); and The classroom and the language learner (196). I have published numerous book chapters and articles in journals such as TESOL Quarterly, Applied Linguistics, International Journal of the Sociology of Language, The English Language Teaching Journal, Language Awareness, Le Français dans le Monde, Signos, and Applied Language Learning.
I am the Editor-in-Chief of The Modern Language Journal (since 2007) and am on the editorial boards of a number of different journals. I am co-editor (With Francis Hult) of the book series Educational Linguistics for Springer Publishers.

LING 8531 - Pedagogical Grammar in FLT
This course is designed to provide teachers of different languages with opportunities to investigate and practice pedagogical subject matter knowledge and grammar teaching strategies in the language that they teach. There will be a number of different languages represented in the class, which will afford multiple opportunities to explore, investigate, and share a variety of pedagogical perspectives and linguistic experiences.
The course will combine a focus on recent theoretical approaches to grammar (cognitive grammar, construction grammar, systemic – functional grammar) with innovative and practical approaches to teaching and learning in an authentic, action-based and interaction-rich setting.

Surveys, in seminar format, research in second-language learning relating to language teaching and learning. Discusses the role of affective variables, interaction, learner strategies, and learner factors in the language acquisition process. Prerequisite: Language Analysis
