Katherine Punteney

Program Chair, Associate Professor in International Education Management

Dr. Katherine Punteney’s experience in international education spans sectors including public and private higher education, and for-profit and non-profit organizations. She brings a passion for educating and advising students to her work, and is committed to assisting students in achieving their academic and career goals.

Professor Punteney came to MIIS from California State University, Chico, where she served in a variety of roles including Interim Director of Graduate and International Student Services and Coordinator of International Student Services and Campus Internationalization. She was actively involved in the recruitment, admissions, orientation, and advising of international students from more than 40 countries. She also served as a faculty member for the Asian Studies program, teaching courses on contemporary issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

While spearheading CSU, Chico’s campus internationalization initiative, Dr. Punteney led a university-wide steering committee and seven sub-committees which worked to expand the international content of the University’s teaching, research, and service functions. Her projects included developing an international studies minor, expanding communications and PR for international initiatives, implementing an advancement plan to support international programs, facilitating workshops to improve faculty and staff intercultural communication skills, and launching a series of international career workshops for students.

With primary research interests in campus internationalization, study abroad, and international exchange, Dr. Punteney is currently investigating ways in which U.S. institutions of higher education can better prepare students for international careers.

International Experience

Dr. Punteney’s international experience includes four years in Pune, India managing exchange programs for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Her responsibilities included supervising international staff teams, developing program curricula, creating marketing and pre-departure orientation materials, delivering training programs, budgeting, crisis management, and program assessment.

A highlight of Dr. Punteney’s tenure in India was conceptualizing, developing, and facilitating an international service-learning program in cooperation with local schools and community organizations. Her role included marketing, curriculum development, community outreach, facilitation, and oversight of the program.

Professor Punteney worked at a private junior high and high school in Japan, teaching English and U.S. culture, preparing students for overseas exchange programs, and supporting incoming exchange students. She also has experience taking a delegation of high school to Mexico for an international exchange event.

In addition to her long-term overseas opportunities, Dr. Punteney’s personal and professional travels have taken her to Canada, China, Iran, Ireland, Mexico, Nepal, South Korea, Singapore, Turkey, Thailand, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.

IEMG 8500 - Principles & Practices Intl Ed      

This foundational course will introduce students to the breadth of the international education field. Course content will emphasize fundamental principles of international education through a focus on seminal literature in the field. Additionally, the course will emphasize exploration of career specializations through interactions with practitioners and individual course assignments.

This course will focus on the dynamics of crossing cultures. Through readings, discussion, and experiential activities, students will explore the challenges and processes of cultural adaptation. Examples will be drawn from immigrant stories, study abroad, and international business contexts.

IEMG 8562 / ICCO 9562 - Biculturalism&Multiculturalism      

This course will focus on the experiences of people who identify as Bicultural or Multicultural. Through reading first-person accounts, engaging with experiential activities, and studying theories of identity development, the dynamics of biculturalism and multiculturalism will be explored. The course will conclude with recommendations for supporting individuals with bicultural and multicultural identities.

IEMG 8598 - Intl Education Directed Study      

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a local international education project. The fieldwork project will include an academic research component as well as extensive hands-on work with a local program. This course may be taken up to three times for credit.

Exploring the role of international student and school services (ISSS) offices in U.S. higher education, this course will explore the research and best practices in relation to orientation programs; academic and social integration of international students, scholars, and their families; ISSS office structures; U.S. visa types and immigrations regulations; restrictions on employment; and the role of the international student and scholar advisor.

This course explores approaches to developing the global competence of youth in formal and non-formal education. Topics include curricular and co-curricular program development, international travel and study, the use of technology, and policy initiatives.
