Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

Track the Institute's progress in creating a sustainable campus.

As part of its commitment to students, faculty, and the general public, the Institute publishes summary statistics of its sustainability efforts. Here you can find information on the Institute's greenhouse gas and waste audits. These statistics serve as a tracking device for you. Every year we continue to work towards our goals to further reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and non-recyclable waste that can be monitored here.

Greenhouse Gas Audit

Every year, the Institute conducts a GHG audit of Institute facilities and Institute-related activities. Conducting annual GHG audits helps the Institute to monitor progress in reducing emissions and determine a quantity of offsets necessary for carbon neutrality.

14-15 Total Emissions Breakdown.png

From 2008-2010, the Institute saw considerable reductions in its emissions from travel. The 2010-2011 audit, however, showed an increase in travel emissions. Reducing travel emissions, the largest component of the campus footprint, represents a major challenge that is currently being addressed by the Sustainability Council.

By the end of the 2014-2015 school year, the Institute has reached the lowest emissions since the beginning of monitoring. We hope to continue this success into the coming year!

Emissions by Source 2014-2015

The FY 2014-2015 audit illustrates a 52% reduction in our institute travel emissions! This is an important accomplishment for the institute as it advances towards carbon neutrality. More details around our campus improvements to mitigate our GHG emissions can be found in the "Carbon Neutrality" section of our "Current Initiatives".

Campus Waste

The Institute is committed to minimizing waste and increasing recycling whenever possible. The Sustainability Council continuously monitors, documents, and tracks the progress of weekly campus waste output. Our 2014-2015 waste metrics were as follows:

  • Average Weekly Waste: 2,920 lbs.
  • Average Waste Recycled Weekly: 1,109 lbs.
  • Average % Waste Recycled Weekly: 38%

Goals

On July 1, 2010, the Institute officially merged with Middlebury to become a Graduate School of Middlebury College. Accompanying the merger, the Institute set a goal of recycling at least 40% of its waste. At 38% waste recycled weekly, we are very close to reaching the recycling rate goal and hope this trend continues into the coming year!

Battery recycling

Since February 2008, the Institute has been collecting used batteries in special recycling bins throughout campus.  To date, the Institute has recycled 1,934 pounds of batteries!
