Contributions from more than 500 alumni and friends of the Monterey Institute have resulted in MIIS receiving $3 million in matching funds from Institute Trustee David Jones and his wife Betty.

With a focus on academic excellence, including scholarship aid for students and the investment in several faculty positions, the Jones challenge was meant to encourage others to invest in international education, “We very much support the mission of the Institute in preparing young people for international careers. Our nation is very insular and there is a tremendous unmet need, a tremendous deficit in young people who understand cultures and languages other than our own.”

David added, “We didn’t want to be orphans in this; we wanted to make sure others were helping with us.” Others did indeed heed the call, and the Institute experienced a 17% donor increase for the fiscal year ending on June 30th, due in large part to the incentive of the Jones challenge.

“David and Betty’s unwavering support, as well as that of the many donors who stepped forward to meet the challenge, provides great incentive for our students and faculty to continue their extraordinary work – in the classroom, on the Monterey Peninsula, and around the world,” according to Beth McDermott, executive director of institutional advancement. “We need to build on this momentum, and continue to share the stories of our students, faculty, and alumni, who every day are creating and implementing solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.”
