Symposium Draws Attention to Children of War

A refugee separated from her family. A doctor tasked with caring for 27,000 people. These were among the five remarkable speakers who gathered at the Monterey Institute last Friday evening for the American Red Cross symposium “Children Of War.” Among others, the symposium featured: Michael Khambatta of the International Committee of Red Cross; Dr. Ashis Brahma, sole doctor for a Darfur refugee camp in Chad for two years; and Dorothy Sewe, a tracing specialist and former refugee camp resident. Their powerful stories of the psychological and physical effects of war on children, told before a crowd assembled in the Institute’s Irvine Auditorium, generated this story in the Monterey County Herald.
