"Afghanistan: The New Iraq?" was the provocative topic of a panel discussion at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco yesterday that included Sharad Joshi, adjunct faculty member of International Policy Studies at the Monterey Institute. Joshi also serves as a research associate at the Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program.
The panel also included Sophie Delaunay, Executive Director of Doctors Without Borders United States; Kori Schake, Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University; and Fariba Nawa, a freelance journalist. Deborah Saunders, a columnist for San Francisco Chronicle, served as moderator of the panel hosted by the Commonwealth Club. The Club, founded in 1903, describes itself as "the nation's oldest and largest public affairs forum, bringing together its more than 18,000 members for over 400 annual events on topics ranging across politics, culture, society and the economy."
Joshi’s participation on the panel was especially timely in view of the fact that his spring semester IPS seminar course is titled "Terrorism in South Asia," and included least two sessions on Afghanistan and Pakistan in March.
