The Monterey Institute’s Development Project Management Institute (DPMI), an intensive professional certificate program, will launch its first training program in Kigali, Rwanda from January 14-23, 2014.

The DPMI Rwanda program blends practitioner-led instruction with client-based fieldwork to prepare participants to design and contribute to projects that address health (specifically HIV/AIDS), gender and education issues. Participants will gain practical knowledge in social marketing for development, design thinking, facilitation, organizational development, and partnering. As part of the training, participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with local organizations including Partners in Health, an international social justice and health organization founded by Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Paul Farmer.

The DPMI Rwanda 10-day program will be led by Dr. Beryl Levinger of the Monterey Institute and Marie Kagaju Laugharn, former staff member with the UN Development Programme and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

“I am thrilled to be able to take this program to Rwanda, where anyone can witness firsthand how a country could rise from its ashes and how it continues to strive for excellence and better conditions for its whole population,” said Laugharn, who was born and raised in Rwanda.

Additionally, a three-week intensive DPMI training is offered every winter in Monterey, California and every spring in Monterey and Washington, D.C. The next DPMI Monterey certificate training will be held this January 6-24, 2014. Interested professionals are encouraged to register for both January DPMI trainings by October 31, 2013. Past participants include graduate students, development practitioners, career-changers and those interested in pursuing a career in international development and social change.
