388 New Students from 32 Countries Become “Citizens of the Monterey Institute Community”

August 21, 2013

President Sunder Ramaswamy welcomed the incoming class of 388 students from 32 countries, speaking 28 different native languages to the Monterey Institute on Monday at the start of Orientation Week. He reminded them that wherever they came from, and wherever they hope to go from here, they all have two important things in common – they are citizens of the world, and now also citizens of the Monterey Institute community.

Whether their studies are focused on language education, translation and interpretation, environmental policy studies, nonproliferation and terrorism studies, international business or any other of the degrees offered here, Monterey Institute students all aspire to make a difference in their chosen field. Alumni speak of the “warm and welcoming” atmosphere that transcends any differences in culture, background or language.

Celebrating the new arrivals, the Monterey Institute community hosts a number of events and activities during Orientation Week including “Voices of the Class,” a dramatic, spoken-word performance based on the interesting, funny and thought-provoking responses of the incoming class to a list of prompts they were sent over the summer. The audience of new students got to hear the “voices” of their fellow classmates, and judging from the laughter and cheers heard in the Golden State Theatre, they already like each other a lot.
