The Monterey Institute’s Center for the Blue Economy (CBE) offers financial and academic support to Monterey Institute students working on summer projects that will enhance their studies and provide them with professional experience to help build their dream careers after graduation.

This summer the thirteen CBE Fellows span the globe: from right here in Monterey, to placements elsewhere in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, South America, China and the Pacific Islands:

  • Tiffany Carlson is in Lyngby, Denmark working with Maersk Drilling, developing environmental management plans for their rigs. Tiffany plans to learn everything she can about ocean engineering and the drilling sector, and forge a career as a sustainability officer in industry.
  • Sarah Cowen will be working with KAI Marine Services in Malta to conduct a marine survey of turtle & cetacean populations. When Sarah finishes this fellowship, she will spend two years with the Peace Corps in Mexico.
  • Rainey Graeven will be spending the summer on the beautiful west coast of Ireland to generate a travel cost model of recreational marine fishing in Irish waters. Rainey will be working with Dr. Stephen Hynes, a Fulbright Scholar who previously worked with the CBE in Monterey. Rainey will be a part of the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit at the National University of Ireland in Galway.
  • Two students will be working with Save the Waves this summer.
    • Justin Wright will design a willingness-to-pay study for a surf reserve on the Bukit Peninsula in Bali, Indonesia and assist community members in a World Surfing Reserve application.
    • Cindy Zuluaga Jimenez will be in Huanchaco, Peru, creating a methodology for analyzing the economic value of surf spots, using sites in California, Huanchaco, and Pichilemu Chile.
  • Malcolm Johnson will be staying in Monterey, California, working with Oceana to analyze California fisheries that interact with leatherback sea turtles and draft an international agreement codifying a trans-Pacific partnership between the U.S. and Indonesia to protect leatherback turtles.
  • In Santa Cruz, California, Samantha Robinson is working with FishWise to prepare white papers and briefing documents on social issues in seafood and fishing and relevant proposed legislation. Sam is particularly excited to be building on work that 2012 CBE Fellow Tami Weiss began.
  • Also close by, in Capitola, California, Nereyda Montano will be working with Driscoll’s and the community to address the issue of aquifer overdraft in the Pajaro Valley.
  • Gabe Kiritz will divide his time between Amman, Jordan and Dubai, United Arab Emirates working for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) studying the Middle East and Northern African seas.
  • Nate Maynard will be working with the Ocean Recovery Alliance in Hong Kong, China to compare trash reduction methods in waterways and determine the economic impact that the Global Alert - Floating Trash platform will have on watershed and coastal communities around the world.
  • Hanna Muegge is in Koror, Palau working with One Reef to mitigate sediment flow that smothers reef-building corals in the Pohnpei lagoon area.
  • Erich Pacheco is working with the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program in Papua New Guinea to value the coastal resources in the Yopno, Uruwa and Som Conservation Area of the Huon Peninsula.
  • Kelsey Schueler will be in Silver Spring, Maryland with the National Marine Sanctuary program, preparing a valuation survey to determine the economic value of tourism at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.
