Every fall, the Monterey Institute welcomes a new batch of students with a wide range of experience and aspirations from around the world. We recently got an advance on that promise when we heard from Amy Michelle Slay, incoming student in the joint MPA/Master of Arts in International Education Management program.

Amy applied to the Monterey Institute after working with a number of MIIS alumni as well as former professor Jean du Preez at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna. “I had not really planned on pursuing a graduate degree,” she shares, but adds that her dream is to work internationally in the field of global and local education. With so many colleagues from MIIS she laughingly admits that there was some “elbow-nudging.” But the true inspiration came from working with Ryan Gonzalez (MPA ’10), e-learning and new media specialist at the CTBTO and her immediate supervisor. “He is such an effective leader for social change that it was inspiring,” Amy says.

Amy has an undergraduate degree in communications and German from Lake Forest College and wants to build on the experience that she gained working on education outreach and learning platforms at the CTBTO. She decided to apply to the joint MPA/Master of Arts in International Education Management as it perfectly fits her career goals. “Working with Ryan, I realized what an asset he is to the organization – and would be to any international organization, and I know that this degree will give me the foundation to pursue my dream career.”
