Institute alumna Anna Cummins (MAIEP ’02) and Marcus Eriksen, both of the Long Beach-based Algalita Marine Research Foundation, will stop at the Institute on June 9 as part of "JUNKride 2009," a 2000-mile educational bike tour from Vancouver, British Columbia to Tijuana, Mexico. Both the bike tour and the duo’s presentation are aimed at highlighting the recent California-to-Hawaii voyage of JUNKraft, a raft made of 15,000 water bottles and parts from a Cessna 310, built to raise awareness about the growing problem of plastic debris in our marine ecosystem.
The pair’s presentations and an update from event co-sponsor the Surfrider Foundation will be followed by a meet-and-greet reception featuring a raffle to raise funds for the cyclists’ unique journey. Read more about JUNKride and the JUNKraft.
