Professor Harvey Arbaláez

The sad news reached Monterey late last week that recently retired MBA Professor Harvey Arbeláez passed away in his sleep on February 27 after a brave fight with cancer, surrounded by his family at home in Colombia. The Institute has again lost a valued community member and friend.
Professor Arbeláez joined the Institute in 1998 after previously teaching at Pennsylvania State University, Rutgers University, Temple University, St. Joseph's University, and Philadelphia University, as well as institutions in Latin America such as UPB and EAFIT (Colombia), ESAN (Peru), and IESA (Venezuela), among others. He also consulted for the International Trade Centre of the UNCTAD/ GATT through the auspices of the regional UNDP for the internationalization of the business curriculum of the business schools in Latin America, and more recently for the UNCTAD Division of Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development on FDI policy reviews. His scholarly writings were published in The Thunderbird Review of International Business (formerly The International Executive), Managerial Finance, Emerging Markets Quarterly, International Review of Financial Analysis, International Journal of Management, and many others. He was regarded as an expert on business in Latin America, corporate finance, currency substitution, and foreign direct investment, among other fields of interest.
Professor Arbeláez will be remembered especially for his enthusiasm and dedication to his students. As Professor Fredric Kropp, program chair of the Fisher International MBA program says: “Harvey really cared about his students. He touched many people in the time that he was at MIIS.”
