Less than two years after graduating from the Translation and Localization Management program at the Monterey Institute, Emily Frye (MATLM ’11) is happily managing localization projects into 14 languages at Apple Inc. “I feel the classes at MIIS really prepared me for my position at Apple. My understanding of CAT tools, terminology management and the opportunity to have studied with a diverse group of people, have all been very useful on a daily basis.”

Emily stresses the importance of taking advantage of the many opportunities MIIS students have to acquire professional experience while still students. Emily got an internship with Monterey Language Services where she “gained hands-on experience in localization project management” and she believes that gave her a leg up in her interview with Apple as “they were looking for someone who had at least a year‘s experience in localization.” She is very happy with her combination of skills—being a trained translator as well as a business professional—and says it “gives her a very important perspective when managing complex projects.”
