DPMI Plus Assignment: Jhpiego (Tanzania)
Undergrad: Middlebury College
"Being in an international setting amongst mission-driven individuals working to impact social change, I find myself at home."
Development Management Practicum Institute (DPMI), a three-week intensive professional training program, is what initially brought Elizabeth Edouard to the Monterey Institute.
"After week one at DPMI...I knew that MIIS was a great fit for me," she said.
While pursuing her Master of Public Administration degree at MIIS, Elizabeth was also part of the DPMI Plus program. Her assignment was in Tanzania with Jhpiego, an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with The John Hopkins University. Elizabeth used the skills she acquired in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) at MIIS to provide spatial analysis for male circumcision outreach activities.
"I would like to contribute towards social change through innovative approaches, for both data analysis and visualization techniques, that leverage local knowledge and perspectives."
Elizabeth's work during DPMI Plus led to a permanent position with Jhpiego as a research coordinator. She is currently overseeing a new study on HIV prevention in Iringa, Tanzania.
"After spending a long day in a heath facility in Tanzania, I revel in the energy of my co-workers who, tirelessly and without hesitation, rise to the next challenge," Elizabeth said. "I believe that improvements in public health, especially at the primary health care level, are critical for the wellbeing of populations."
