In the spirit of the season of giving thanks in the United States, members of the Monterey Institute community are sharing expressions of gratitude. We continue our series with Associate Professor Wei Liang, a specialist in international trade and development policy, as well as the political economy of East Asia and China.
When asked what she is thankful for, it does not take Wei Liang long to answer: “good students.” She says she is grateful for students that come to class “well prepared and have something to say about the subject,” but even more than that, she appreciates her students’ openness to different perspectives. In her opinion it is a critical component of any policy class for students to be able to listen to and understand the point of view of others without taking the differences personally.
This year Liang celebrated the publication of her book China and East Asia’s Post-Crisis Community: A Region in Flux with Faizullah Khilji (Lexington, 2012) and she is very thankful for that achievement as well as the prospects of taking a sabbatical next fall to work on another exciting book project.
On a more personal note, Professor Liang feels very fortunate to have commuted from the San Francisco Bay Area to Monterey for the past six years without experiencing an accident.
