Jeff Murphy (MAIPS '98) says his education at the Monterey Institute was invaluable to his career in public service.

While standing in the coca fields of Bolivia talking about microenterprise lending for alternative crop development, Jeff Murphy (MAIPS '98) realized the value of his education from the Monterey Institute.
"I wouldn’t have been able to do that without my time spent here at MIIS," Murphy said. “It’s really remarkable when I think back to the skills that are honed here."
Murphy recently returned to the Monterey Institute to speak to students about opportunities for careers in public service.
"For me public service is about putting nation before self,” he said. "A career in public service is a worthwhile rewarding career."
Murphy is a retired Army Officer who has worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Director of National Intelligence. He is currently a civilian employee of the Department of Defense, working at the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies at National Defense University. Murphy believes that Monterey Institute students have a unique set of characteristics that make them a great fit for work in the public sector.
"With their backgrounds and language skills I think that working for the federal government is an excellent opportunity for them."
