MIIS Invites Local High School Students to a Celebration of International Education
October 26, 2012
Every day at the Monterey Institute is a celebration of international education, but once a year the campus opens its doors to spread the joy of learning about other cultures and languages to local high school students. “Our visit last year was the highlight of the school year,” says MIIS alumna and teacher Jennifer Carter (MATESOL ’97) who is now bringing her second group of English as a Second Language learners from North Salinas High School. “I am so proud of my students,” she adds, “and they seem to be having an unforgettable experience this year too.”
About 80 students from four local high schools participated in this year’s full-day event in honor of the U.S. State Department’s official International Education Week at the Monterey Institute campus. The event is organized by the Institute’s Office of Student Services but relies heavily on student volunteers who share their language, culture and study abroad experiences with the students. The high school students also get to know teenagers from the other schools as they move around the campus in a blended group.
The day was full of exciting sessions. The visiting students had a language lesson from student teachers in the B.U.I.L.D. club, learned about foreign cultures from MIIS English language students, heard about study abroad opportunities from MIIS students who shared their personal photos and stories and finally took a crash course from students specializing in translation and interpretation.
